Hammond m-3
« on: April 22, 2006, 07:36:02 PM »
Hey brothers from way different mothers, heres a thing.

Im getting a Hammond m-3 (well hopefully) tommorow but there is no leslie. Its only 100 bucks, but I dont know where to get a leslie (well except of the internet for over a grand). Im a poor kid, you gotta realize, so where can I get one for cheap or are there any alternatives. Also, as Ive never played a real organ (just the hammond xk-3) are there any tips or anything I should look for? 8) ???

OH and by the way, I already have a Roland KC-550 amp. Arent there things you can hook up to it to make it rotary (like one of those motion sound things?) DO those work well?

A Motion Sound and a KC-550 with an M3 will sound very good, but the Motion Sound will still cost $500.  There are no cheap leslies.  There are Leslie similator pedals designed for digital keyboards but I doubt you will be happy with them.

So, find a cheap used Leslie, or the Motion Sound products if you can afford them.  Keep in mind that not ALL old Leslie models are good.

You should be able to get a used (in good shape) Pro3T on eBay for around there, I should think.  New I dont know, it's been years since I bought one.

SO I should try to get a motion sound pro 3-t? And the organ is compatible with it? What kind of cables do organs use anyways?

I think you should try and find a good deal on a used Leslie such as a 22H, 47, 45, one of the other single speed models that can be had for less.  Make sure it has a horn, drum and (preferably tube) amp.

If you'd rather have a Motion Sound look on eBay.  You can use a Pro3T with your Roland and it will sound very good.

I'll say, that if you plan to get a digital Hammond keyboard when you have the money (such as a VK7) the Motion Sound is the better option.  If you plan to get a real B3, a Leslie is better.  Basically if you play to be portable go with the Motion Sound otherwise the Leslie is better.

The Motion Sound hooks up with a 1/4" Input.  The Leslie hooks up with a 6 pin cable.  In both cases the M3 will have to be wired specially for it, and it will require a kit for the Leslie.

OK thanks a lot. SO I would need to get a 1/4 in cable, where in the organ does that go? Do I have to cut anything or do anything like that, because I dont wanna mess with stuff I don't know about?

Yeah, you're going to have to cut into things, and wire things, and basically, know a little about electronics in order to hook either speaker up to the M3.  You can find information to walk you through it, or find someone locally that already knows how to do it.

Here's a link to directions on how to rig up a line out (1/4" jack) from an M-3:

If that doesn't make sense to you, you need to get help from someone who's used to working on electronic stuff. It's a pretty simple job for someone experienced, but if you've never done anything like that before, it could get tricky.
