Getting the noise out of my amp
« on: April 18, 2006, 08:43:28 PM »
I have a Bassman400, a fender 25, and a Ampeg BAS115 and I am getting a loud hum out of each of them.  I have a decent set of chords and I play a 5 string Yamaha, a 4 string Curbow Cort, and a 6 string Tune and they each have various levels of hum. Is there a direct box of some sort that  can buy that will take out the noise.  Lastly, when I pluge my amps into a PA system the hum is really pronounced. My next move is to purchase a set of exspensive cords.  Any suggestions :-\
Thanks
Groucho

I'm not familar with those amps but try cutting back on the gain or master volume.  Then try to tuning your bass volume.  If that's not it then try new cords.

Have you changed your battery in your Bass.  I was getting a loud hum and I changed my battery and it went away.

I agree and also, make sure that your electrical outlet is functioning properly.  I ran into a problem playing keys one time with an outside gig where my keyboard amp was humming because I didn't have a good ground.
Keep God first and he'll do the rest!!!

Thats what I was thinking the same thing happening in all amps is unlikely. If you do not have a 3 phrong plug going into the wall outlet your bass amp is not grounded. Even some houses and churches may have a 3 phrong outlet but the church wiring is bad. I have a ground switch on the amp I use. + 0 - . I switch it to one of these settings and it goes away. You can get a shield guitar chord from $10-20. My amp will hum too when the connection is not good at where I plug the guitar in the amp.

Thanks to everyone for the noise tips.  I will look into changing my batteries more often and I will also get a better cord.  I have the ground switch that was mentioned and I will tweak that around a bit to see what happens.  I will also make sure I have good ground connections.
Thanks a Million

Ive read somewhere to change the batteries every 6 months. Also if you leave the chord plugged into the bass when not in use it will drain the battery.

I change my battery every 3 months no matter what, and once in a while I'll get this bug to chance my battery once a month. but generally I change it every 3 months.

As for the leave it pluged in, it'll drain the baatery. It gets annoying that I have to unplug after the music part of service then I have to plug back in for alter call.

Try use a ground lift. They are .45 cents. Usually gray in color, three prong for power plug input.
Two prong into the outlet.
