I tried recording me playing on my kit at church. It sounds a little better. I think this one is A LOT better than the other solos I put on here. Check it out, and tell me what I can work on here. I worked on some of the things you guys told me to from my last post. Lowered the hats a little, timing, etc...Tell me what you think! I'll take anything!! Thanks!

Oh yeah- It's the last (fourth) video on the page. The other three I have posted before. The first 30 seconds of the video are kinda boring but It gets a little better!

I aggree I think this was a better sound and performance than the previous clips. I like how you attempted to set a theme for the solo in the beginning. It didn't seem to fully develop into anything but it shows that you are learning to compose which is agood thing.

Keep doing your thing. Especially recording yourself and then watching it back and analysizing what you see.

Looking good. GET YOUR LEFT FOOT GOING. Let your left foot keep your time.

I did for a little there in the middle. Sometimes I start to and then stop because I am worried about the other stuff I am doing with my right.

Yeah, I totally screwed up with that in the beginning. It was going to go somewhere but I messed up so I just kept going. I didn't have time to re-record!  :-\

If anything I would say that you might be sitting a lil low. Ithink that you can sit an inch or two higher to give your left hand more clearance from your thighs. Yu should be able to play 16ths with your hands on the snare and double pedal at the same time without the arms toucing the thighs. The added seat height should also give you better leverage/ankle mobility for pedal work with less pressure to the legs which should give a smoother motion.

As far as cymbal height you seem comfortable. As long as you can reach any cymbal on either side of the bod with the opposite hand with fully extending the are then you are cool.

I feel like I am a little too low also. I was just trying some different heights to see if it made a difference. I heard something like if your feet are flat on the ground your legs should be parallel with the ground. I have short legs so with the throne all the way down my legs are parallel!

Find a height that's comfortable for YOU. It doesn't matter what I think about how high or low you're sitting if YOU can move around the kit comfortably. That's personal preference. I've played on kits with the throne too high, and I was uncomfortable. But if it's too low, I hit the rims of the toms. This one really is a personal call.

Keep practicing and trying things until you find exactly what YOU want. Hope this helps.

The high-hat looked like it was too high...but then that could be due to what the others said..you were sitting low.  ...But..I agree with baldeagle...do what's good for you (unless I am wrong).  Off the topic.....What type of camera were you using to record yourself?

I was using a kodak digital camera. It records like 3 minutes or something. Its not much, but it gets the job done! It takes too long to put a clip on here with a video camera!

thanks for your comments!

I like having my hi-hats high because I like the rock sound I get from it.

Hey...

I just watched your clip.  You are well on your way.  Keep up the good work.  I've been playing the drums for about 9 years now and I have a few tips that you maybe can use.  I noticed how low you sit on your drums.  Either that or your kit is sitting very high.  Try lowering your entire kit just a little where your snare is level with your knee or just a little higher.  Your hats should sit slightly above that.  Also, try tilting your toms away from you so that your hitting down on them rather forward at them.  I tried this myself and it works.  Try it and see how it works for you.  Be encouraged and continue to develop the gift that you have.  God Bless

I've been seriously playing for about 3 1/2 years. I started playing when I was 13 and got my set when I was 14, which was when I started playing at church (I am seventeen now). I don't know if you would count the learning stages!
