I understand how you feel.  To retrain yourself, you're going to need to SLLOOOWWW down.  You need to clear your head and then set your mind to one thing: learning to play in a new key.  The only thing that's holding you back is your mindset.  Your fingers can be trained to do whatever you want, but if your mind says, "This sucks and it's frustrating," then you'll hit the same brick wall you're hitting now.

Seeing that you've been playing in C for 6 years, you shoud know a plethora of chords.  So, you need to take those chords and transpose them up a half step to Db.  Learn your basic 1-4-5 and 2-5-1 moves and then the rest in Db.  Then, do it in D.  Then, in Eb, and so on.

If you have a keyboard and some time, then you can do this as long as you clear your mind of everything else and relax on this one thing.  As I said, the only thing holding you back is your mindset.

Well then, stop watching them :)

I came up during the time Twinkie Clark played in front of me at COGIC services in NYC. I had Rev Timohty Wright, Willard Meeks, Butch Heyward, John Hasting..................so you know how I wished I could play like them. So I started to really listen to the music and practice one thing at a time. Don't try to sound exactly like someone else. Learn to discover what is your sound. When you hear and see me play on my clips you're seeing and hearing every CD, Album, Cassette, TV commercial, Movie theme, Cartoon music I've ever listened to and added to memory. I can pull music from 30 years ago and make it relaltive to today's sound only beacuse I took time and learned it. I never took a piano lessons in my youth but I played in my high school band where I learn to play music as a horn player. The greatest thing in your life right now is the Internet and willing musicians. You can learn in months what it took years for me to learn.

If you need a place to get started come to my site at www.samsmuzikco.com/education.htm . I have what you need there.

Reggie-don't give up. I started 20 years ago, and I had to overcome a similiar situation. I learned to play all songs in Ab, umtil I had to back-up a soloist in another key. I was lost. Since then, I made a comittment to learn ALL keys. Now, I can play any songs in all keys.

How did I do it.

1. I learned to read music (optional)
2. Bought beginner books along with a CHORD book (a must)
3. During rehearsals with band, I requested we play in at least 3 keys. (a must)
4. Finally, I modulate alot during service. (optional)

I hope this helps.
All That I Am, I Owe to the LORD.

First off, don't give up. You must continue to pray and belief that God will give your desires because you are doing this for Him and His glory. Second, you have to realize that people we regard as "great" organists or musicians had times when they were lost and wanted to give up playing but they practiced through their tears and through their pain and disappointment and eventually moved the mountain that was blocking their playing ability. I can't emphasize how important it is for you to learn all of the major scales, after practicing these scales your fingers will naturally be able to move around in other keys. But you must know the building blocks of those keys, which is the major scale of that key. If you have questions about the fingerings or notes in the major scales I can post that info. But don't get discouraged, it takes time and you have to be patient and slow down. Also like a previous person said, build off the chords that you know in C and just take it up to the next key. After practicing that key going up. I hope you understand what I'm saying. Be blessed! Your breakthrough will definitely come because God is on your side.
