Isolation headphones and clearsonic shields
« on: May 08, 2006, 07:57:04 PM »
I have a shield around my drums at church, Everything bounces right back at me and I am scared I am going to damage my hearing. I didn't really even think about this until the other night when I came of the stage and my ears were ringing. So I decided to use my isolation headphones, they work great but I find that when I use them I play too loud and I can tell when the music director is singing softer or when the music is being played softer. SO I am kind of stuck here. What should I do?

Actually, by doing that you end wrecking one ear while the other is fine... then your hearing is worse off than having 2 bad ears!

Don't you have lead vocals & other instruments coming through you headphones or a monitor? Usually drum shields & in ear (or other) monitors
go hand in hand...

nevermind my suggestion then.  anyhows i tried it and its not comfortable cause it tends to move while your playing and specially while you sweat.

Are your headphones the monitor ones? If so get them to turn up your drums way up in the phones so you don't feel like you have to play harder......If not there's a company called Hearos! They make a product that gives you all the good sound levels and leaves you hearing all good volume, dynamics and highs!

ok you all are going to jump on me for this BUT
i tried the Hearoes- coulodn't hear a thing unless there was a super loud system and a bunch of stage noise- i used it on a Huge auditorium gig like 4 levels- so the system was Blazin- but otherwise i can't hear anything

the isolation headphones- that don't plug into a system- give me the same effect that you experienced

i have used regular headphones and they actually work a little better

BUT my favorite is............hear is goes................. he gulps slowly

TISSUE!!!!!

yeah that is right a little ball of tissue
you still hear everything but just at a lower level but not sooooo low that you play too hard/loud and can't hear other people- whether band or singers....... there yoou have it my honest answer

Here is what I am doing.
I went and bought a small Berhinger mixer
that has a headphone output.  I removed the
powered speaker that I was using for monitor,
and plugged the signal into the mixer.  I currently
have only 1 mike on the drums, so I bought a Y
cable to split the signal to give me drums in my
headphones.  I can then mix the signals and monitor
through the phones, at a comfortable level.
I was breaking cymbals, and sticks, well I did break
one Sunday night during a song we did for 45 minutes,
but over all this has been this is working great.
I drastically cut down the volume in the plexiglass shield,
and am able to play more comfortable, and more relaxed.
By the way, I'm using some $20 headphones from Walmart,
I may upgrade later, but for now they are doing the job.
If you need some more info feel free to ask.

Dude I aint gonna lie. I haved used tissue.  A leslie speaker is supposed to be a minimun of three feet away from the organ and a lot of churches dont understand that concept. Tissue is a great cost efficient alternative.!!  :)
