If you chords are basic, you should be able to pull the 3 part Harmony from your chords.  Do you read music or just play by ear??

I think there are a couple of ways to go about it:  You could try it both ways and see which one sounds right, if it seems too low, try the other way.  Or you could listen to the actual recorded songs and find the parts that way.  I don't think there's a hard fast rule for this, it varies with every song, and so you may have to play around with it to find out what sounds right.

I see where your confusion is coming from.

So here's my input.

When you are teaching choir parts, look at the keyboard and play the chord..............the sopranos have the highest note
the altos have the note in the middle
the tenors have the lowest note

Like say for instance we are using a C major chord...............

sopranos have................G
altos have......................E
tenors have...................C

If the tenors are too low, what you do is "invert"..........

"what does this mean?"..........Well in correspondance to our example you would do exactly this.

"Tenors are too low"........."okay"

sopranos have................C (one octave higher than the tenors old note)
altos have......................G (same note as sopranos' old note)
tenors have...................E  (same note as altos' old note)

IF THIS IS TOO MUCH WORK FOR YOU THEN DO THE EASY THING AND JUST MOVE THE KEY TO ONE THAT IS A LITTLE HIGHER.
I Love You!!!

have you tried some of the backing tracks from christian bookstores?usually have full arrangement on one side, stripped down version on the other side.perhaps getting a few songs that you do ,have each section, altos,t,etc.,practice their parts so they learn where their supposed to be.bet roline has something in their product line.hope it helps,be blessed
