I am in the same boat. I am learning patient, focusing on technique (not speed) which will lead you into frustration, building up the correct muscle memory, reading, scales (by notes) not shape, understanding how the scales/modes ect... fit in the theory. A diligent student whom practice the right things will prevail. Blessings.

FYI, my instructor told me that learning shapes is not a bad thing.  You should learn both.
