« on: May 19, 2006, 10:55:55 AM »
Hate to make it seem like Im reposting but I just need to make a decison on what Im gonna buy b4 the end of this week and I dont wanna make the wrong decision. Do u think that these model 6 strings are worth the $, and why you think that...

$2100
http://www.gibson.com/Products/GibsonElectric/Tobias/Killer%20B/
$3150
http://www.gibson.com/Products/GibsonElectric/Tobias/Basic/

I plan on keeping whatever bass I get forever...just want my money to be well spent and not just for the name...even though I love tobias basses.

I haven't played neither of the two.  My suggestion to you is try them out before you buy them if you can.  For the amount of you money you are plannning to spend, you need to make sure you will be satisfied with the purchase.

I agree 100%.

For that kind of money you could also pull in some other nice basses as well.....don't Ken Smith's start at around $3k?

God Bless,

that's a good question.  Ken smith has made a big impact on the gospel community.  They are nice basses but why such a big impact in gospel.

Then you haven't been around me long enough.  Over the past 10 years or so I've had 6 different Alembics.  Still have two and play one of them at my church fairly regularly.  Sometimes I think people get sick of hearing me talk about Alembics, so I've toned it down a bit.

Rather than hijack BassAddict's thread, I'll start another thread with pictures of my Alembics.  Feel free to ask me questions about them in that thread.

Peace,

James

okay what do you guys think about this (especially malthumb) this bass...
http://www.musicyo.com/product_specs.asp?pf_id=535
then add the bartolini pickups...

The bass is $750 + $205 for the pickups which puts me under $1000 and I get the neck through...the only thing that I miss out on is the mid cut/boost switch, grover tuners?, and push pull slap tone switch. But I would save $1100...what do you think?

One thing I will ALWAYS be consistent about...

If you can find the bass you want used, buy it.  If you absolutely hate it, you'll be able to turn around and sell it for what you paid for it.  Now, to answer your question, I don't have any real experience with the Toby line of Tobias basses.  I do know that the Tobias name was licensed to Musicyo to build the basses inKorea or China or somewhere in Asia Pacific.  A really quick scan of eBay says you can get a used one for around $600 - 800.

http://cgi.ebay.com/Tobias-Toby-Pro-Neck-Thru-4-String-Bass-Guitar-TP4_W0QQitemZ7414915988QQcategoryZ4713QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

If it were me and I were spending $1,000, there's SOOO much nice gear out there the Tobias Toby line would never enter my radar screen.  I'm not saying its BAD, 'cause I just really don't know.  I just know that there's a number of things that are unquestionalbly good available for that kinda money (Peavey Cirrus, Lakland Skyline 55-02, a REALLY good Fender Jazz or Precision).  If you really really really gotta have that Tobias, go for it and tell us how you like it.  If you're buying it just because of how it looks, I'd advise you against that, since looks is the least important element.

Hope that helps.

Peace,

James
