Chris actually did play pocket. People on here don't actually undersatnd what pocket is... Pocket is not playing simplistic scaled down "beats". This song has several coonsistant and repeatitive time signature changes. This is also an "improvisational" (jazz) piece. The song is phrase driven, it is about musical communication and vocabulary.
Thanks for the clip. What do you mean Chris dosen't play pocket? If you're talking about the stereotypical definition of pocket, "playing a straight 2 & 4 with little to no fills." ,then I guess you could say that he wasn't on this clip. But seeing as the piece was entirley for Chris to solo over, he was able to stretch out and didn't have to play "pocket". Good clip nonetheless!
Yea I kno Percush..I was hinting to those who like to give alot of "Constructive Criticism" They might state that he didnt play in da pocket or sumthin! Im glad u realized dat it was his solo.
The song is phrase driven, it is about musical communication and vocabulary. This not a "solo" piece. The fact is that the time, groove is kept by the other instrument(s) and the drums are up front playing more the melody/lead voice part. Do not lead folk down the wrong road saying that this is a drum solo because it is not.
Chris is also a very polyrhythm oriented player which means that in his rhtyms he is playing various overlapping time signatures himself that at once compliment and stand out in the overall time of the piece. HIs heavy study of improvisational/jazz and African music comes out in his compositions. This is something that most urban drummers don't do - COMPOSE. Most urban drummers and LGM members play beats/grooves and don't play thought out/well constructed composed parts. We emulate instead create.
THANK YOU FUNKYFINGAZ for the clip though. This clip is hot! THIS IS MUSIC.
