He starts out by playing a two finger chord that uses the tonic (A) on the E string and the major 3rd on the G string then plays that same chord in D, again two fingers one on the E and the other on the G strings then up to the 6th although this time he plays the minor 3rd since the sixth is a minor and then back to the 5, E and its major 3rd.  he then repeats that progression with the exception that instead of going to the 5 he goes up to G# only using its minor 3rd as the second note.  Repeat this sequence until you get into the song a ways.  Keep in mind that the top note is played on the E string and the second note is played on the G string. Once into the song its pretty much a straight 1465 progression with a couple of minor exceptions you'll be able to figure out

I've seen this played different ways, but this always semed the easiest to me.

Yea that's it, it my not be the way LGM rely info to others. What can I say I'm lazy.

I wasn't to sure of how well he knows his fret board.

It's a song by Darrel Evens

Here's the lyrics

I'm trading my sorrow
I'm trading my shame
I'm laying it down for the joy of the Lord

I'm trading my sickness
I'm trading my pain
I'm laying it down for the joy of the Lord

Chorus:
And we say yes Lord yes Lord yes yes Lord
Yes Lord yes Lord yes yes Lord
Yes Lord yes Lord yes yes Lord Amen

I'm pressed but not crushed persecuted not abandoned
Struck down but not destroyed
I'm blessed beyond the curse for his promise will endure
And his joy's gonna be my strength

Though the sorrow may last for the night
His joy comes with the morning

Forgot to add that I just finished a 12 hour day, that's the reason for my laziness.

E5 would be an example of a power chord.  Power chords have a very simple harmony consisting only of the root note (in this case 'E') and its related 5th.  So using the example of E, its related 5th is B (starting from E, if you count to 5 you land on B).  The same pricniple would apply to other chord symbols such as C2, G6 etc.  On bass, you most likely would not play the entre chord, but rather just the inervals indicated in the which is usually just two notes.

Funk you are correct, but that isn't what I was refering to. I guess being tired I forgot to type exactly what I meant. I didn't mean a power chord I meant string E 5th fret which is an A.

i guess its all in how you percieve it to be, right??  ;D

funkstrat, interesting.. i get it.. i think either way you look at it, its a lazy method you expound on 3rd's,5th's,7th's,9th's,11th's etc, both dim/ aug. its been a while since i've even went off chord charts as im just starting back into being (more serious) about bass playing.

Ohhhhhhhhhh, I think I may be understanding now. This is not a gospel song, ti best discribe this song I'd say it's Christian pop/rock. You won't hear it on a gospel radio station,

All I know are chord charts. I understand no other instrument, but the bass. I was teaching a keys/guitar student about chords. I've took the time to learn theory. I think I have may neglected the "groove".

Darrell Evans is considered contemporary praise and worship.  trading my Sorrows has been out for quite some time and Evans hasn't really had the kind of success his earlier material had.  I would argue that's in part to the fact that Matt Jones, the bass player on his earlier work, is no longer with him.  Jones' bass lines were very melodic and often quite unusual.  They often made what would have been a very mediocre tune in the hands of most players very listenable.  He just goes to show the importance of the rhythm section to the success of the overall group.

Welcome aboard play4zero!!  Thanks for that tid bit on Darrell, I didn't know that about the bass player he had ... luv his music, got his CD .... "trading my sorrows" and "freedom" are a couple of my favorites.  I'm pretty much a listener of varing styles of christian music anyways.

bassman2007 ... if you are refering to Israel Houghton's (spellin) version of "trading my sorrows," you can see a videoclip lesson on how to play the bass intro at http://www.gospelkeyboard.com.  If you can't view the link below, you would have to log-in, mouse-over  "video/audio clips" on menu and click on "FREE lessons".  It's the second from the top.

Thank you very much.  I've decided to try and learn the music that has always spoken to me.  For some reason I have trouble hearing the progressions right now, but I think that will come, and then I ned to find a spirit filled place to play it.
