Underated bassists
« on: June 03, 2006, 11:56:53 PM »
I was listening to my Dave Weckl CD the other day, and I realized just how tight his whole band really was. Then I noticed that the roots of his band are found in their bassist Tom Kennedy. Now I'm not too sure how many of you are familiar with the Dave Weckl Band or Tom Kennedy, but lemme tell you, the man is FIRE!!! Check out this clip of "The Chicken", and pay attention to Tom Kennedy's solo. Everything is so smooth and crisp............

Who is a bassists that you beleieve is really underated?

I heard him on Gospel Chops, sound check clip... that's all I have heard of him, I think.. But he was definately nice on that clip.  Ran across his page on myspace once, but can't seem to find it again.

Dw has played for Youthful Praise, did a couple of Floetry gigs, James Hall on his latest project release and of course produced on his father's last 2 project's in case you didn't know his father is Elder Timothy Wright.  ;)

Uhhh...are you sure this list of bass players get overlooked?  I dont know who ace livingston is but everyone else on this list are well known and respected.  And Tom Kennedy...well how is he underated?  He plays for the Michael Jordan of drums...Dave Weckl!

I guess what Im trying to say is, these people that everyone is mentioning have plenty of credits in the music industry.

Maybe I dont fully understand what you mean by "underated."

Let's be honest, when you think of bass guitar in terms of the pioneers of modern bass, you think of Jaco Pastorius, Victor Wooten, and Marcus Miller. Now Dave Weckl I think is a pioneer of modern drumming but in terms of his whole band I'd never heard of Tom Kennedy until I looked him up. Underated bassists are bassically bassists who've been doing their thing well, for a long time but dont get as much recognition as the 3 that I mentioned before.
