Welcome to the fam... In my opininon, if your set is made of ply-wood, then it's still gonna sound terrible. It's all in the wood not really the heads you put on. Although the heads are very important, the wood is the key. And I take it that when you say Wal-Mart set that it's a very cheap set.

...tell your Pastor that those drums stink!!!  You can at least find a used Pearl Export somewhere for the price he payed for the Walmart kit.  I bet the keyboard player has a Yamaha Motif or a Korg Triton, right?

...of course, JFunky. Remember, drummers aren't real musicians? That's what they say ....

Your answer should be "With all due respect Pastor.... It's just a pile of plywood"

As for the heads. Change it, no doubt. Anything sounds better than the stock heads that come with low end kits.

They need to foot the bill on at least a set of Pearl Forums or ddrums...

Wal-Mart that is disrespectful !

Heads probably want help because the wood is cheap, the bearing edges that insure the sound are not true, The shell are probably not in round (meaning they are not perfectly round they are warped a bit) and for sure the lugs won't hold the proper tension for real heads long before they break. The hoops will being, the snare wires are not worth snot.... The stands will last like  a day the pedals, well ummm, NOT!

God bless you and yopur situation. That was a waste of money.

$500 i sthe minimum they should budget and that is really not enough for long term quality under inexperienced drummers. Even experienced drummers can go through a $500 dollar kit in 6 months if it is not a quality brand.

You should of said No, There more like a childs play thing. I would have been like "well a playskool mic is a mic isn't it, why don't you use that instead of the $100 mic you use now". Just playin but seriously... If a Pastor doesn't trust the judgement of his Musicians there will be a long term problem........

This is sad.  :( :( I discussed this a few weeks ago with an associate. This is the main motive musician turn away from lack of http://effective equipment. I remember a post some time ago on LGM on a topic about thrones, where the guy said “ all of sudden the drum stop and he didn’t see the drummer—Why? He was on the floor. The church must http://respect the musicians as well. Peace…

Often times, a 'drummer' is not respected because of the perception that one has about said 'drummer'.  Find ways to change that negative perception (which illicited a cheap drum suggestion) to a positive one.
