Most used scale for gospel basslines???
« on: June 08, 2006, 08:02:00 PM »
I was wondering what do you guys think is the most used gospel scale out there??? I've been playing for a couple of months and I find myself using minor scales alot, very few majors, 2-octave minors, and I use blues, and major and minor pentatonic to do fill in and runs. I really want to expand my playing so what are some other scales that can help me be more complete???

I guess I find myself using major scales more often. Major 7ths, natural 3rds, etc. But I also use chromatic stuff quite a bit.

i'm finding myself to be in just about the same position. All of my fills are based on the minor scale (dorian, aeolian). even when i listening to other bassist i can always pick out the minor scale but nothing else. so i was told, that its more of an ear training thing. So what i'm doing now is trying to focus on learning what other scales sound like and not just knowing the figeriing.

Are we talking solo licks or progressions?  Progression-wise, I only hear in the major; the 1-scale (Ionian) in particular.

Like that Hez. Walker "Graceful" walks all over the ionian.  It would be hard to imagine they put that song together NOT thinking ionian.

Trotter's "Next Dimension", (probably that whole cd, just guessing)

That Yolanda's "The Battle is the Lord's",  These songs are slamming hard in (1).

Morton's "High Praise", "Let it Rain";

Trotter's "Take care of you",

"Great things" (whoever that is...),

Martha Munizzi's "Latter will be Greater",

"Yet I'm still saved,"  (Who is that?)

...and so on.

I purchased a new Hohner B Bass Vl ( 6 string ) and she sounds great.  It has a switch that toggles between Passive and Active.
In Passive mode I can put my volume on two and totally blast a small church.

So! now my collect is:

Hohner B Bass Vl
De Armond Pliot Deluxe 6
Washburn XB-500
Peavey T-40 ( 1980 model )
