Post some of the most famous/catchy bass lines!!
« on: June 05, 2006, 12:16:19 AM »
I thought this would be kewl to do as i just read a post on famous basslines..
Lets see how many posts we can come up with that are famous both old and new school like sanford and son, welcome back carter, brick house etc.. although i dont have the tabs to these or others off the top of my head..

if we post some groovy/famous lines we can all learn that groove and will be most likely allready familar with the song..

i will look for something to post, in the mean time who will go first.??

lets see how many we can gather and be able to bookmark this post for further edjucation/referance from the famous basslines

I Want You Back  -  Jackson 5

G:l -------------------------------------------------------------------------               -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
D:l ------------------------------------------2-----------------------------  REPEAT  ------5--5-4-4--2--2-2-----------------------------------2-------------------------
A:l ------------2-5-3--------2-(3)-3--5-----2---3------------5-5----               2 / 5--------------------5--2--3-----3--5----(3)-3H5---2--3-----------5-5----
E:l 3-----3-5---------3--5-----------------------------3---5-5------3-               -----------------------------------------------------------------------3---5-5------3--

Where I only have one - between notes, those are eighth notes.  They're played fast and CLEAN.  You may want to practice this slow at first and then build up your fingering speed.

I hate to say it but I don't know how to read bass tabs, so you'll have to help me on that.  I'm better with a CD or tape ;D ;D ;D !!!!!!!

The number on each string represents the fret number.  You should read from left to right in progression.  If numbers are stacked on top of each other, then that's a chord.  The closer the notes are to each other the shorter the note and vice versa.  When you see something like 3H5 you simply play the 3rd fret and hammer on the 5th.  There is more to reading tabs, but for what malthumb posted, this is sufficient.

@ malthumb ... for some reason your tabs wrap around.  Have you ever considered using Activebass.com's Line Builder?  I believe you would have to be a member to save and publish.  It creates the tabs for ya.  It doesn't allow you to display hammer on or pull offs though.  See what I mean:  http://activebass.com/default.asp?iTarget=http%3A//activebass.com/cgi-bin/seq_prev.pl%3Fi%3D87966%26myid%3D270811358.  I don't know if I got it right, but that's the last tabs you posted on this thread.  I don't know what the song is though.

Ladybass,

thanks for the heads up.  I would've never known, 'cause it doesn't wrap on my screen.  I did check out Active Bass.  Thanks for the tip!  I will try to use that for writing tabs going forward.  I've tried to tab a few things for members here, but it takes forever typing them into the "Reply" screen.

Peace,

James

I can't give you the tab, but there are so many I don't know where to start.  "Rock Steady" by Aretha Franklin, "Strawberry Letter 23" by The Brothers Johnson, "If You Want Me To Stay" by Sly & The Family Stone, "What Is Hip?" By Tower of Power, "Skintight" by The Ohio Players.  The "2" different basslines that Verdine White plays in "Getaway" by EW&F.  How could I forget Anthony Jackson's bassline from "For The Love of Money" by the O'Jays.  We all know about James Jamersons basslines.  Too many to name.  Although not a famous bassline please check out Willie Weeks whole bass part on Donny Hathaway's version of "Young Gifted & Black".  Bobby Watson's bassline at the beginning of "Hollywood" by Rufus and Chaka Kahn.  I think the begining is him and not synthbass, but I'm not 100% sure.
