i am not really a competent organinst i am learning there are many things i still need to learn
one thing i am discovering is ythat what makes the organ sound good is actually the opposite of what logic tells you
for example i was playing annointiing in church today and used some chords that i got from charles minor
the melody note was a g and i played
an F# triad under that melody note
they clash but within the context of where i came from and where i was going it worked
it is funny when i begin to explore this instrument the pretty things that work so well on the keyboard sound very dull and corny on the ortan and what would be very ugluy on the keyboard can be made to sound very nice indeed
some examples of this is when
you put a major tritone against a minor chord
or when you play a major pregression using minor chords
or when you play diminshed harmony
i want to continue to explore this concept
let me share with you this arrangement for annointing
This was taught to me as an example of thomas whitfield type style or the midwest sound
let me warn you it is very dissonant and will sound awful if you play it the first time without letting the melody play for at least two times
let the song circulate at least twice before going to this version
I played this song this morning with great success i was surprised how such simple changes can make such a difference
This song is in Eb
One idea is to bring in the song by playing the straight melody against the first two notes of the right hand chord this way the listener is prepared for what is coming
c
G/FBbD/FAC nnoint
C/EBb/F#A#C# ing (this is the ugly chord)
F/EbAb/EbGBb fall on
Bb/DAb/DFBb me
repeat
Eb/FBb/ FAbCEb let the power
Eb/ AEb/ F# B Eb of the holy ghost (another ugly chord)
Ab/ Ab C/ G BbC Eb fall on
G/FB/EAC#
C//EBb/ Eb Ab C me
F/ Eb A/ F, F, G annointing
Bb / DAb/ G,F fall
Eb/ C#G/ Eb, Eb on me (another going against the grain chord using the flat seventh on the one)
again let me say that unless you play the song straight a couple of times this will sound ugly
but if you play this after the congregation is in full swing with the song these chords which are ugly become very beautiful
i wish i knew why or how this works
the one thing i can say is that the C chord the second chord of the song which is the ugliest chord of them all is actually a VI chord in the key of Eb and i notice that VI chords can be altered in gospel a lot
i will continue to post in this thread things i learn as i explore this phenominon of the organ
i will share concepts i get from organists i know as well as my teacher charles minor
i welcome anyone else who can shed some light on this reality of ugly being what makes the organ beautiful
of course placement is key
