I talked to the Pastor and he feels if I can played for two choirs I can play for three.
I told him he should feel bless with what you have. I may be playing for GOD, but
If I don't feel the Joy when I play, I'll move somewhere that can fill that void.

I'm in Dallas, GA Let me know if you need a backup Bass Player.

WOW!...DID YOU REALLY TELL HIM THAT?

Oh! yes I did. I wasn't being mean, but that's the way I am.
If you don't want the truth don't ask me.  If I was getting
paid they would not ask me to play for another choir.

When I was playing for money I charge $100 or $150 for
two services on Sunday and If I travel to another Church
it was more.  This I must say PISS ME OFF and I stop
enjoying playing at the Church.

There is no use of praying about this because the Pastor made
up his mind.  I'm happy now.

There's ALWAYS use for praying about a situation, even a situation that you're leaving.

Regardless, sounds like you did what you had to do and it also sounds like the pastor is expecting too much from a servant and has turned your servant heart into a hurting heart. THAT you should be praying about, do your best to come to a God-honoring resolve with that pastor and then move forward to what God has for you next.
Music theory is not always music reality.

Praise the Lord!

I too speak as a pastor & bass player. For many years i have preached with no compensation from my church & on some engagements if the church could not afford. While your pastor kind of sounded a little overboard with his statement, i still want to encourage you to look at what you are supposed to do, sometimes it is not for you to teach others a lesson but it is up to you to be humble & allow God to do the work. Think about David & Saul. Serve faithfully & God will vindicate you. If you run you just might run right back into the same situation at a different location.

Be encouraged!!!

Ok Folks,

I am new to the forum here...But I am a Pastor, so maybe I can offer a pastors perspective.  I can say I have been often misunderstood.  I have seen many talents wasted over a misunderstanding. I would go to my pastor and as Uriah said...Put on those humble shoes
... and hear what the man has to say.  As far as quitting and staying home...My question would be

1. Why are you playing?  To worship the LORD? For entertainment?
2. Who are you playing for?  For the KING of KINGS?  For the church?
3. Is your ministry for sale?

Brother...you might offend me by not appreciating my playing...but HE (Jesus) is worthy of my praise, regardless...even if I am at odds with the whole church...Jesus still deserves my best....So pass me the bass and let me PRAISE HIM... and we can sort it out after church.

Maybe God is testing you to see what you will do with your gift? Will you charge for it now to prove a point?...will you continue to play because you LOVE HIM?... will you quit? (Boy wouldn't the enemy be happy then!) Will you get an attitude?

I will keep you in my prayers...everything said here is humbly submitted.
I pray God give you wisdom!

Amen

But my question to you is that Doesn't the word say "workman is worthy of his hire"? Well why is it that whenever we talk about charging the church, there is an issue?. I would like to know why wasn't the church or why didn't they see the need to take care of this bassist before this issue came up?....Because they were getting a free service. It seems to me that he was already commited to them right.

I have a wife and four Children. I've been paying for 20 years. I love the Lord and have played my first five to seven years for free and getting $50.00, church folk writing badd checks to me, Preachers trying to stiff me when they say they were going to pay me is unacceptable.

So am I wrong to charge when church folk have taken advantage of me? If I wanted to deal with snakes, I would play in the secular genre, at least I'll know what I'm dealing with, but to have to deal with that in the church to me is wrong. That's why I thank GOD that he's given me wisdom. That's not to say that I wouldn't play for anyone for free. I have, I would just like an undertanding before I play for you. IF you know you have no money and you need me, it's ok, just tell me what's up. The problem is when you say you're gonna do something and never do it.
You being a preacher know that the church cannot operate on figs. It takes money to build buildings, air condition, heat, pews, instruments, sound, and qualified musicians that are annointed. Am I WRONG!!

i am saying you are faithful just as david was & look at how he was blessed! of course if you have prayed & heard from the Lord about the situation, i wish you many blessings & i believe He will open up a door for you to continue being a blessing to the body.

I was not going to post here again, until a couple of friends from  here email and talked to me. The name of this page is Learn Gospel Music,We should not be attacking the church or a pastor.

They both belong to the Lord,we do not know the full story here. Just one side, we can't help with this issue only GOD can. He need to keep on playing like he was and Pray to God,only God can instruct the Pastor.

So if you attack a Church or Pastor. Beware!!!
I play for free now, if my Church pays me fine, if they do now fine. I'm still Blessed and getting Blessed

I know LGM is not a play to vent on the Church or its Pastor. That's for sure. I'm going to leave you with this.

your church situation sounds like a good fit for you but your not in the same boat as the person who started this post. how can you tell him to keep playing somewhere it seems they are operating in confusion. as far as money is concerned, i play organ and i dont charge everywhere i go or would even do so at my home church but thats me, i have also been around alot of pastors to know they dont go visiting churches unless they reach a finacial agreement.

This post below is what he said,he did not ask to be payed. After his Pastor ask him to play for their second Choir. But he told the Pastor. NO!!
By this action he could have Blocked his blessing to get payed. Only him and Our Father know the truth intention.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I was told that I was not a dedicated musician by my Pastor!

I was ask to play for another Choir at Church, but I said no.  And
then I was told that I was not dedicated.
I already play for the Male Choir and the Adult. That includes the
8am and 11am service and practice on Tuesday and Thursday. I also play for there Special Services and I
do all this for FREE.

Now I play at Home.

They want me back , but I can't do it.

First This is my first time on the site. it is nice to see musicans discussing things with other musicians.

RE Ungratefull
First I have to say that the person named TEE hit the nail dead on the head into the ground.
You must first learn the bass to your best abilty If that is what you want to be A BASS PLAYER.
I learned to play bass in church under my worship pastor that now has a major record deal and every church covers his praise songs.
It was what worship was meant to be fun, praise, no time table or set songs real praise pastor would be talking about (example) faith and we would start playing a groove and singing about faith or what ever the spirt was speaking through pastor. and some of the greatest worship songs came out of this. As I progressed and with the level of musicans that I was playing with I excelled quickly I started playing with other praise band around town filling in and opening up for Isreal and newbread youth conferences on the west coast.
I have always had a strong production/producing background working in the industry since the age of 17.
BUT I also have a wife of 12 years and 5 children family / work ( making real money had to always come first)  SO I put the bass down for 2 years
Corporate job good money but I missed the praise and worship we had moved to atlanta 2 1/2 years ago to open a cafe
being that we would have live music on the weekends I picked it up again. One weekend a worship pastor was haning out liked my slap techn and asked If I could come to rehearsal at his church. Needless to say I join the praise team with all said and done I was playing/rehearsal 25 hours a week for free.
Long story short sorry it is already long

Same thing AS SUBJECT POST they would trip if i missed a practice or service ect. NOW KEEP IN MIND WIFE, KIDS BUSINESS, HOUSE, ECT
NOW WE CLOSED OUR BUSINESS SO MY MONEY SITUATION WAS STRESSED I NO LONGER HAD THE TIME FOR ANYTHING BUT MAKING MONEY FOR THAT MORTGAGE SO I RESIGNED NO HARD FEELINGS NO ATTITUDE STILL GO TO SERVICE ON SUNDAY TO HEAR THE WORD.

INSTEAD DURING WHAT FREE TIME I HAD I TOOK CLASSES AT BERKLEE HOOKED UP WITH ONE OF THA BADEST BASSES IN ATLANTA AND PRACTICED EVERYTHING I COULD GET MY HANDS ON
AND GOT SERIOUS WITH MY READING (IMPORTANT)

NOW I GET PAYED GOOD FOR PLAYING AND PRODUCING I GET A RESPECT THAT I HAVE NOT EVER GOTTEN I HAVE MORE RESPECT FOR MY SELF NOW I ENJOY PRAISE MORE ECT

SO REALLY LOOK WHAT SITUATION THAT YOU ARE IN IT MAY BE TIME FOR A CHANGE OR YOU MAY NEED TO STAY WHERE YOU ARE AT THE REASON THAT I GOT SO INTO DETAIL IS THAT JUST LIKE YOUR WALK WITH GOD YOU WILL ALWAYS BE AT NEWW STAGES IN YOUR PLAYING.

GOD BLESS
