Learning C Scale and the rest
« on: June 01, 2006, 11:48:35 AM »
I was wondering if someone could give me some tips, hints, lessons .. i'm a beginner and i'm starting from the C scale. I want to know and learn everything about the c scale so that once i have i can bring those techniques and learn the rest of the scales. I'm in a time restraint as our church is moving to its first building and I would love to be able to play by ear before we move and the move is in like 5-7 months. So if someone can help me out on how i can learn all i need to learn to be able to go and play in the new building that would be awesome.

Thanks

You want to be able to play, IN CHURCH, in FIVE TO SEVEN months, and you're JUST starting??

Hmmm....

Maybe someone else can help you out with that one. Nothing's impossible.  However, wanting to be proficient enough to play in church, in that short amount of time, will require a great deal of dedication on your part, you know?

i should rephrase i've been on and off .. so i know my scales .. but i don't know know them .. someone says play this scale .. i can play it. I was put to play the keyboard in my church, and i was thrown on cold and i wasn't feeling comfortable. I want to be able to know what i am playing and where i am going.

I find it hard to knwo where to go next, or what key to play next so i wanted to start from the beginning and learn all i need to know about one scale and use that on the rest of the scales.

Unless you have some tips on how to do this. So iknow my keys and i shouldnt' of said beginner more intermidate. I wasn't as serious before as i am now..

Hi I think you should try learning in all keys from the start giving each key equal time so you don't specialize in any particular key but all of them. It can be time consuming and frustrating at times but a solid foundation does take monumental effort.
That and everything T-Block said ;D

And as for scales practice the modes

Eg key C

Ionian  CDEFGABC
          12312345

Dorian  DEFGABCD
           12312345

Phrygian EFGABCDE
            12312345

Lydian    FGABCDEF
            12312345

Mixolydian GABCDEFG
               12312345

Aeolian     ABCDEFGA
               12312345

LoCRIAN   BCDEFGAB
               12312345

basically so you can start your scale on any note in the scale.

Learning how to play in all of your keys is very essential as someone stated.  Learn the chromatic scale and that will help you identify what key you are in.
Quote
1   2    3   4   5    6   7    8
C-  D - E -  F - G - A - B  - C

Follow this diagram to learn your notes.  This pattern just keeps repeating all the way up (ascending) the keyboard.

Chromatic Scale:
Note: The notes C#/Db, F#/Gb, B/Cb are called enharmonic notes.  They are the same notes, but have 2 different names.

L.H(Root Note)            R.H(Root Chord)               1st. Inversion                     2nd. Inversion

C                                     C-E-G                             E-G-C                               G-C-E
C#/Db                              C#-F-G#                        F-G#-C#                           G#-C#-F
D                                     D-F#-A                          F#-A-D                             A-D-F#
Eb                                   Eb-G-Bb                         G-Bb-Eb                            Bb-Eb-G

Continue by moving every finger up a half step until you reach C-E-G a octave higher.  I suggest that you write the chords down as you are doing this so if you make a mistake you can back track.  At the end you should 12 chords written down.(13 chords if you include the last C-E-G).  When your hand is in the root chord position, your thumb tells you what key you are in.

Next learn the up and down chord changes.  This is also known as the 1-4-5 method or change.  This basic 1-4-5 changes will get you through most congregational hymns.  All other changes that you hear within the songs are other chord progressions that you will learn as you go on.

L.H/R.H                         up change (4TH)               down change (5TH)

C/C-E-G                         F/C-F-A                            G/B-D-G
C#/C#-F-G#                  F#/C#-F#-Bb                    Ab/C-Eb-Ab
D/D-F#-A                      G/G-B-D                            A/C#-E-A

Repeat this process through every key, until you get to C-E-G an octave higher.

This should get you started, if you have any questions feel free to ask.

Be blessed and be the blessing.
