Mad chops made easy and making music... Notice he says in the solo that he thinks about rudiments with a groove. Wonderful phrasing... he mentions keeping melody on your mind in the solo as well... Superior understanding of time/note value which can really be seen in the cymbal placement with the ride and china which he uses to ride (keep time) being up front. Notice the left foot on the hihat never stops keeping time even when closed it is always playing subdivisions.
Purdie is able to keep the fun because he is confident in that he knows what he is doing. He emphasizes the knowledge and has fun doing it because he embrases it... notational values, time signatures 12/4, 12/8 etc, half time etc... and he can tell you what he is doing as he is doing it. He manipulates it all because he can... he applies what is necessary to make the music rise to the next level. He couldn't do what he has done without chops and knowledge. It is argued that he is the most recorded drummer ever It is Effortless... like breathing.
This is a Master at work. The fun is in the completion of the craft, the music and the spirit. Purdie lives making music. He is a musician (well rounded and self taught to boot but he has definitley studied his craft as seen here).
