Why? I didn't take Div's comments as negative or sarcastic. Seems like you're trying to be messy. Are you? If you're a female, grow up. If you're a male. . .MAN UP.
Div, I get what you're saying. Being the only Black in accelerated classes in grade school opened my eyes to this sad truth. But being a high school and jr. high teacher taught me that it's not just Blacks that despise education these days. It was a shocker for me to realize how the media goes to great lengths to make it seem like ONLY Blacks are trying to remain ignorant and perpetuate their low status on the economic and societal ladder of this country.
My real problem with Sabe's statement was not that it implied that Blacks are ignorant (even though it may be by their own choice), but that because somebody was white and playing an urban drum style that they were educated. They may not have been. And since Sabe made this statement in his last post. . .
. . .I understand what he meant. Sabe saying that it was his opinion that they had technique knowledge carries a different connotation. The implication was that they HAD training. This new statement says that it was his opinion. I know that Black communities are having a hard time because they have sewn themselves into the pocket of an ignorance suit. But more and more whites and hispanics are going to the same suit store to jump into a pocket as well.
I get your point Sabe, and as far as the "coming out of the ignorance closet" part goes. . . I'm with you. But let's not just assume that because somebody is not Black, they are more educated. It is just as likely that someone Black sat down, taught those guys the licks they did, and then decided to showcase his students on youtube.
P.S. Notice I used no exclamation points. I'm in no way trying to be combative. Except to the little girl who tried to be messy with Div and me.
Never did I assume that because someone is non-black that they were educated nor did I imply that blacks weren't (as I am black). I made a factual statement though broad... statistics are what they are. You took a slight offense. He definition of ignorant simply is 'not knowing' - that is something easily fixed... decided/will/avail oneself to learn. However it is a majority truth in the African American community either through socio-econmic inequality and political injustice cycled with self-imposition. I too am offended by the sad truth that our community does not live a more proactive life in pursuit of knowledge. In comparison to the world Americans are ignorant in comparison to the countries that have believe our hype. Other countries have surpassed us educationally and stayed ahead because of higher moral standards, value systems and self-discipline.
As I have stated several times before... the drumset is an African-Americamn created American instrument and we are not at the forefront of it's progression. The top guys Virgil, Thomas Lang, Marco Minnemann, Jojo Mayer, Horacio Hernandez, Antonio Sanchez, Benny Grebb, Gavin Harrison, Bill Bruford, Drumbassadors... tend to be from other cultures. We have to as you say MAN UP.
As always BaldEagle, you and I and Div keep it interesting,

. NOthing like a good, clean, thought proviking debate.
