Quick suggestion...after finding the melody, next try listening to the bass-line...you can usually determine the chords by using both.  Also once your ear gets trained better you will start to recognize patterns/chord progressions.  It will get easier.

Hope this helps.

what's the method?

Let's back up for a moment on this question,

First you need to know what key the song is in, ie., C, Ab, F etc...Knowing your scales in all keys will help you with this.
Next find the Melody, if you know the Key and scale your playing in, the melody will not be difficult to find.
Next find the Bass-Line and combine with melody.

Find the chord by using the Melody and Bass (The Bass is usually the root chord, ex., Key of C -- If you play a E in the bass and a G is your melody note, more than likely the chord will be Emin or Em7-E/BDG).  Not always the case but you can usually find the chord you are looking for from these 2 notes, using the root chord harmonized from the scale.

Here is a link that talks about chording or harmonizing the scale using triads more in depth.
http://www.zentao.com/guitar/theory/chord-scale.html

This will also get easier, eventually you will be able to hear or know what chord is used from putting the bass and melody together.

Again, it is a longer approach, but once your ear is trained better you will know the key and hear the progression/patterns clearer.  Once you can hear the progression, 7-3-6-2-5-1, 5-1-4, etc..., and know what key you are playing in, you don't need to pick out chord by chord, because you will hear an entire progression and most of the time be able to anticipate the next progression of a song as it unfolds.
