  ?/?Where do we go to learn how to play Gospel Music? I see a lot of posts that are in reference to the different kinds of Bass Guitars and etc...but nowhere does it teach us how to learn how to play Gospel Music....after all that is what this site is about isn't it? Instead of trying to find out where the best Bass Players are we need to ask where are the teachers willing to teach inexperienced bass players the fundementals of Gospel Bass.

If I'm not mistaken, you have to be a premium member to gain access to all the learning tools but there are still plenty of free tools available in addition to all the bassists here on the site who may (or may not) be able to assist you in your development.

I, myself, have posted several examples of different styles of bass playing and I am also working on getting a good vid cam so I can present some minor instructional tips. There are quite a few cats here who already have posted vids and examples.

There is a lot of good information throughout the forum.  It may take some searching to get exactly what you are looking for.  If you have any specific questions just ask away...someone will be able to point you in the right direction.

I been telling you guys this all alone. The bass forum betrays something other than Gospel and Church music and everything that goes alone with it.
About 90% of the post here do not help anyone to play Gospel Music. But you can learn here how to play other things.

Just not Hymes,Triditional Gospel Music. Not in the BASS FORUM you can't. But we got Post about a Bass player who played alone side Prince, Tabs On how to Play Getaway By Earth Wind and Fire.
Bass Off contest without any Gospel Music to teach or learn from.

Note: Gospel doesn't have specific genre-- it stems from different genres. Trust, I learned the hard way and this will make things less confusing. However, like someone posted search within the form.

Very well stated.  Ask for little advice, but still look for a local instructor.  Also, we can all learn from different genres, whether it is good or bad techniques.

dictionary.com defines gospel music as quoted, "A kind of distinctively American religious music that is associated with evangelism and is based on the melodies of folk music blended with elements of spirituals and jazz."   Take as you may.

Well like I said before get an instructor, get with a church that will allow you to grow, and practice alot on your own. No one is being forced to use this site. I personally love it, and it has helped me tremendously. So if you really dont like the site, and ALWAYShave a gripe, then why do you keep coming to the site? i hope this is not found offensive to anyone.  The originators of this site have done a great deal to bring  something to the net that we gospel musicians can enjoy. One wise saying that i heard says "live and let live"  the Bible backs this statement in Romans 12:18 "If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men ". 

Another verse is Ephesians 4:26 "Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath:" it has gone on for too long. let it rest and allow it to be an experience to mature you.

The only thing that Im saying is that just use this site as a tool. Yes, we talk about more than just gospel, but thats not a bad thing. I really come b/c I like to be part of this brotherhood of musicians who are inspring others through music. I share some of the things that I know and I take some of the things that you all share too. Thats what it is all about, sharing information and using that info o inspire others. I appreciate the great deal that these moderators and site coordinators went through to give us this tool, and I just think that everyone should get what they can out of it, and if this place doesn't please you, then maybe its not for you. Nothing personal, just stating the obvious. I love this place and as long as it is online, Im going to come and post everyday

I think you make a good point.

If you look at the evolution of gospel music...it was derived from the Blues...most early gospel bass followed root motions a lot of time using a 1-4 progression.  The turnarounds (as in most music) are some sort of 2-5 progression and it was traditionally improvised using the pentatonic and the blues scales.  If you look at contemporary gospel today it has more of a jazz feel in it's complexity using re-harmonization and more complex progressions and it transends all flavors of music. 

I'm being vaguely general here but the point is that the theory on this site helps to understand what all that means.

The gear talk helps to find your own sound.

Transcribing lines (albeit not all gospel) helps in ear-training in a way that you will never understand until you do it.

So I think that to be a great musician (which is why I come to this site) I need to be flexible enough to absorb and use the information and knowledge that others are willing to share on this forum and apply it to gospel.

That's confrontational behavior. I don't intead to be mean when I say this, but you're pretty new here. New people always come to the site with their idea of how things should be run. It's not going to happen. You can't come in here new expecting to get people to think like you. It's not going to happen.

Confrontational posts are probably more detrimental to the character of the site than secular posts....but...

The site rules state that "No secular posts", so please no secular posts. This doesn't mean you can't talk about secular artists, but it should lead back to gospel music somewhere.

Okay, I have to step in here and say a few words.  I do agree with you cleveakabig on one point.  This part of the LGM forum is not necessarily about learning how to play Gospel music and I am okay with that.  I think the LGM bass members like to post to this particular forum just to get general advice from experienced players.  Not just theory, teaching exercises etc...but questions about gear, life experiences, opinions, inspirations and encouragement.  There's a lot more to playing bass than learning a style of music, so I think this is a good place to pick up other pointers.  This part of the forum offers a lot of advice and discussion about other things to do with playing the bass and where you stand as a Christian musician.  There are a lot of experienced/professional members that pass on advice in a humble manner and with a lot of humility.  I feel that a lot of members get a lot good advice about a lot of different and challenging topics posted here.

I am an experienced player both within the Church and as a professional working/touring musician.  I have experience playing lots of styles of music as well as Gospel.  I don't have all the answers, but if I can help a brother out with a question I will.  I think that's how everyone else treats this forum...kinda like a 'think tank'.  There are plenty of members here that are happy to help out with learning how to play Gospel and the musical theory and technique side and there are plenty of posts in the archive to support that.  If you don't want to read or post about the other topics here that's fine...that's your choice.  Get yourself an LGM premium account and may God bless you.

I am subscribed to a lot of forums, but this is the one I enjoy posting to the most.  Why?  Because we are all brothers in Christ and I feel that this is another fellowship that I belong to.

If you don't like what you read here I would suggest going somewhere else to get what you want and save yourself a lot of time if this forum does not live up to your expectations.  I welcome and respect other member’s opinions, but to be critical is one thing.... using decorum is another.  Treat other members with respect regardless of your opinions.

Its pretty odvious that some people get it, while others don't.

One of the problems with this site is, it is lacking bass information, really lacking.  I hope to do something about that in the near future.  Another problem is that, everyone that goes to church isn't saved, so sometimes the post can get out of hand.  We hope to contain that in the future.

But the website was never set up to sit around a campfire and sing Kumbaya.    At my church, we have Sunday School, Church, Bible Study, etc....  but we also have Exercise Classes, basketbal tournaments, financial seminars, relationship workshops, etc....

Even though we have this extra stuff at church, the center focus is still Christ.  Understand???
