I was up in Jersey a couple of weeks ago. I stopped in Rondo and play around with the Douglas WEB-846.
The pickup sound pretty good, But I would definetly replace the preamp. A good setup, new preamp and you'll have a very nice sounding bass. Plus it is a very light bass, compared to my Stiletto studio six. I've been consittering ordering one myself as a backup.

Are you a bass player?...No...I'm just kidding. ;)

The preamp is inside the bass. You USUALLY can't see it from the outside. The preamp boosts the signal from the pickups, so you get more volume. It's basically a miniature amplifier, hence the name "preamp" or "preamplifier".

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Preamp

The pickups are basically magnets used to convert the vibration of the strings into an electromagnetic signal. There are passive ones (which use natural magnets) and active ones (which use electromagnets), usually most basses use passive pickups with preamps. Passive basses don't have preamps, but you can purchase an external preamp for a passive bass.

You can't go wrong with a preamp though.  I love the way its adds to the overall tone of a bass.  I can't play or don't like to play without a preamped bass.
Keep God first and he'll do the rest!!!
