I think the question to ask yourself is...
Do you want to get better, or do you just like the idea of gettin' better?
Gettin' better, OBVIOUSLY, takes time & concentrated effort. I meet guys who call themselves musicians all the time, but I hardly ever meet guys who want to educate themselves, and really hone their skills. Guys will cling to gospel music & R n' B music .... because, frankly, you don't have to pursue knowledge & have a great work ethic to get a gospel or R & B gig ... or even be considered "great". Most guys who get together, and do nothing but JAM, from what I can see, play the 'easiest' genres out there.
Where are the challenges?
Having to overcome a few technical obstacles will really make you question whether this is what it is you want to do. Learning a complicated roll .... I'm not talking about that. I see guys who have a repetoire of complicated rolls, and mediocre technique. It's all flash, and no substance. If someone was to post links to different ideas for fills that could be applied to urban music ..... their would've been 10,000 hits within seven days. However, the links that were posted ...requires PATIENCE, and a dedicated efffort on the part of drummer ........ and those are things that a lot of guys are not willing to give, for their craft....
So, I ask you --- do you want to be a great musician -- or do you just want to be a showman that poses as a musician??
