Peep This!!!!
« on: August 25, 2006, 07:09:26 PM »
Wuddup fam. peep this thursday i was playing at church and  everything went so horrible i played the worst i had ever played in my life. it started out one of the song i had neva practiced and the next song the piano player was screwing up and it looked like it was my fault. then during that song we just got into it good we were doin so good then i went to do a cut and i unpluged my head phones so all i heard was absolutely nothing cause the headphones were still on my head so i really couldnt here myself. then i started dragging cause i couldnt hear the singer nor the piano. Then  I caught a cramp  and my foot got caught in the beater cause i was sitting to close....

So i just wanted to kno has anything like this ever happened to you all? :)

...yeah, we all have bad days or get stuck in a rut.  The thing is that I've seen you play.  You're still learning.  Don't get down on yourself for it.  You have to learn to establish your groove and make the music feel good before you throw in any kind of fills.  If you don't know about fills or don't know how or where to throw them in, just play that groove till the end.  As you keep playing, you'll develop this.  You also have to learn how to sit and watch how close you get to the drums.  I wasn't there that night so I can't give my full assesment on how the keyboardist did.  Another thing, if the headphones were unplugged, why did you keep playing without using the headphones ?/?  That's a no no.  That means you chose to kill the whole song instead of plugging them things in and playing.  Keep working on your timing and work on loosening up your grip like I adviced you the other day.   ;)

Yes we all have a had many a bad day performing....

Now for the lesson:
  • Always keep the left foot keeping time even when wearing phones or using a monitor... whether by opening and clising the hihat or just pumping the heel of the foot when the hats are closed (4-way coordination starts here)
  • Always check your distance from the snare center and tom center before you start playing
  • Study Billy Ward's Big Time DVD on using timing mechanisms... keeping the subdivisions and knowing where the one is is mandatory
