will i be discriminated against?
« on: August 26, 2006, 01:19:49 PM »
I come from a mennonite community, where EVERYBODY is white, and im not sayin that that's bad, but the thing is, if anybody from a different race would come to my church, ppl would STARE at them!! and I was just wondering..if i would go to a church in a mainly african american community..would ppl look at me strangely? I am in love with the soul that is in those churches..it inspires me to no end. Everyone always tells me i was born with the wrong skin color...well I don't know if skin color should be somethign that seperates ppl...i've got a lot of soul...fill me in!

Darlin', I think the answers you receive will vary from church to church. I can tell you that at MY church, you wouldn't be given a second look unless, you were wearing something that you KNOW you shouldn't have been wearing to church  ;) :D

Be Blessed, and welcome to LGM!!

Same here. We have a Jewish lady in our congregation and her "shout" is a traditional Hebrew dance and nobody cares!!!  Its interesting though. I just finished up reding about the Amish and Mennonite faiths. Very interesting history.

Welcome to LGM, sis. You are welcome here, and you will be welcome anywhere, in any church where GOD Our Father is in charge.

Now if people are in charge without the leadership of the Holy Ghost, then there is no telling what might happen. But it matters not what they think, that is their ignorance. You just feel welcome anywhere GOD sends you.

Be Blessed, everyone  :) ;D

Bless your heart!  I was raised Mennonite!  I was attending a Baptist church, but have recently moved to a non-denominational one that's really "alive".  All I can say to you is this; I am used to being the only "clear" colored person in the room.  If people notice, honey, they forget!  One time I was asked to play the Anthem for a Black History Month celebration of gospel music.  I very nicely told the Pastor who requested the song, that I didn't know it.  He quickly asked why didn't know it and then just as quickly realized he had forgotten I was white :)  Now that stuff does happen everyone in a while :)  I also knew that I needed a different church style, yet, I am grateful of the church/lifestyle I grew up in.  I still adhere to many of the ways, just louder and faster :)  Let me know if you would like to discuss this more and I'll give you my e-mail address. I'm also curious to know where you came from... I'm originally from MN. (an EMB church)  By the way... thanks for breaking the stereotype that all Mennonites are still without power and are not progressive! ;D

OOOPS! I forgot something... If you can, read "The Mennonite Review", there you will find articles on the huge numbers of Mennonites who live on the African continent.(not sure if it's on the web or not)  The Mennonite community I grew up in was very color blind.  I didn't know I was "white" untill I moved away and everyone around made sure I knew what the color of my skin was.  It was quite a shock.  I had never been taught to think of skin color, and no one around me ever discussed it.  People were discribed as being Mennonite, or non-Mennonite, tall, skinny... but never with the undertones we hear out in the world now.  Also, try looking up the site.... I think it's the third rock cafe' ???? well, google Mennonite sites, and you will find out that there are MANY,MANY different kinds of Mennonite churches out there who have what you are looking for as far as style.  I would belong to one now if I lived near one!  Yes, there are Mennonite churches in CA! ;D

...all I can say is join the club with that question!.....At least we know someone now in you that we can ask...."hey...how did it go?"

My thought is that some folk wont like you for one reason or another wether you are black...or blue...or white!

Most people that I have seen in the churches I have attended....were Black...and they have a love ya in Jesus name attitude......with a side order of wait and see!

One thing for sure...if this helps!....Most Black churches aren't all Black by design!...I think that we are still mostly seperate because white folks have the same questions that you have!.....

...So what do ya do?....Take a deep breath....and go!.... ;D

B4 I got saved I would have! We had this white lady at our church, and when I saw her, i was like whats she doing here. It bothered me for a long time. Then I gave my life to the Lord and her praize was the same color as my praize!  For a long time I thought that just black people where the only ones who shouted, spoke in tongues, and ran around the church. Then a friend of mine just happened to invite me to here church with 12000 member and she 4got to tell me that it was a mixed church. There I learned that white folks shout and dance to. And, they where some of the nices people I had ever met. I still love them to this day.
