Forgive me of my ignorance, but what is a shed? Or more specifically, what's a " shed session"? Please be kind; I wasn't born omniscient.  Also, is there a place on this web site with all of the terminology for the gospel music genre? |

A wise man once said a question is only stupid if it is not asked.  In any case a "shed session" is simply a bunch of musicians who get together and throw around ideas and such. its really fun when you get together with other folks and just mess around and throw ideas around. |

In its basic form, a shed is simply a group of musicians getting together to play their instruments and hopefully learn from each other.
Some sessions go to the extreme where people are basically just showing off what they know (or think they know) and the more inexperienced players get left in the background for fear of embarassment.
I'm sure some other folks can expound on this, but this is my understanding of what a shed is.

Its a little building, usually found behind a house where people store thier tools and garden supplies.
Seriously, a shed session is when a bunch of musicians get togather and jam, while sharing the new ideas and tricks that they have learnd.
They call that a shed, because you are giving part of yourself away, so that you can recieve new stuff. Its just like a snake, he has to shed the old skin before he can grow new skin.
Sometimes when a musician says that he is gonna shed, he means he is gonna lock himself in a room (shed), and practice until he gets better.

Once when you were taken to the tool shed, you were about to get to the (seat) of learning. I always thought that shedding was a take off on that. You were going into a deep and serious learning session.

I've only been to one shed and that's how it was. So I now shed with youtube and my iTunes library. |

The inexperienced players should just bring thier video cameras and not be ashamed of there current (temporary) skill level. I have no problem watching and taking notes while the advanced players shed. |

First among sax players sax became "ax"e and by extension all other musicians picked up "axe" as slang for their instruments. Sax players need a good lip or "chops" which are slang for technique and skills. To develop his "chops" a young player would take his "axe" to the "woodshed" to work, practice and develop his skills. "Shed" is just a shortened newer version of saying going to the "woodshed". |
