Do they sound real?!?!?!
« on: September 13, 2006, 12:51:55 AM »
What up fam,

My boy Terrance Vaughn (MD for James Fortune & FIYA) has introduced me to the world of drum programming a la Reason 3.0. I am going to post some stuff I have been working on later but check this track out. The song is "My Dance" from the "You Survived" CD. The drums were all programmed and wanted to know what the "acoustic" players think about this new trend. Holla back. DeeMee.

Tone wise the sounds are very well recorded samples. Playing wise, people don't play like that... The drum programming lacked that natural flow of a human being playing.
Comparison/reference is take a listen to Mint Condition. Stokley does most of the drum programming when he nor Chris Dave is actually playing real drums. He programs like he plays though so "feeling" wise you cannot tell a difference. ?uest Love is that way as well with the Roots and other stuff he programs.... He plays like he programs and programs like he plays.
I don't like the trend. The same thing happened back in the 80s when drum machines first hit big. THe music sounded really "canned". Same thing is going on now. Personally there is no substitute for a live drummer. However I like the trend of remote recording that drummers like Russ Miller, Greag Bissonette, Gavin Harrison, Virgil Donati, Rick Latham and many other have gotten into. They have all invested in true home studios with big time studio gear and they record the drums and send them to the client via the web. If economy is the factor this is my option - I choose live drums over programmed samples.

I totally agree with you on that one Sabe. There is really nothing like having a real drummer.

For me personally, when producing a song, this works great for me conceptually. It lets the drummer know what my vision for the song is. But 99% of the time, I will use a live drummer. I am pretty much on the fence with the trend though.

I'm actually on the fence with this, too. I mean, I can see how this would strike fear in the hearts of session drummers. At the same time, it IS a business, and it does cost less to program than it does to hire a session drummer. Furthermore, the average person buying these records aren't musicians, and they really can't tell the difference. Even if you told the average person it wasn't a real drummer, I doubt they'd be bothered by it, in the least...

...and Sabe, the reason why this works, is because so much "canned" music is being made. It's easy to replace a drummer in the studio when the drummer's part sound so inorganic. That's why I'm so intrigued by what Robert Glasper & Chris Dave does ...

...it wouldn't make since to program those parts, because the POINT of that music is for MUSICIANS to experiment & vibe. This artificial jive that's being created .... doesn't really move, and in that case, you don't need an actual drummer.

So, yeah --- I'm on the fence.

sounded pretty good man, i'd work on the panning a little bit. it seemed to be panned way to far out on the toms, and they sounded backwards at times. but the programming itself was pretty tight.

Sorry guys I have to admit this program has it place. It opens up an ave. of thinking and song writing. I can just do it on my computer then later translate it to kit..Sometimes Ill just leave the programming and move on....Its coming from me just like it would if I was playing so hey. You'd be surprised how much of Marvin on Friends last cd was not Marvin....I miss Marvin!

That was a decent job of programming. That snare was nice. Is the drummer playing a midi drumset-up or is he finger playing?
The one critque that I may add is that the drums lack emotion because there are some holes that needed to be filled in where a drummer would have filled the void. But it was cool. Nice samples...

I think its was pretty cool. It was all finger played out on a MIDI keyboard. We all know that if you want live drums, you get a real live drummer but you have to admit the concept is kind of cool. I am playing around with it (Reason) myself and trying to do things I normally do on a kit with my fingers on a keyboard. It's fun.

As I said earlier study Stokley with Mint Condition and ?uest Love with the Roots. These guys program with a live drummer feel. Look into Ableton Live... It seems to be the industry choice these days in live settings especially. Saturday Night Live's Sean Pelton used it with his G4 rig at Modern Drummer 2003. Computer Music MAgazine (a British Magazine) gives a lot of TSep-By-Step tutorials on it. You can pick it up at bOrders/Barnes & Noble etc. sometimes thet give away older versions for free on the accompanying CD.

Appreciate the info Sabe. I have played with Ableton a little. It came bundled with my Pro Tools software. At this moment, most of my production work is done on either the Motif, Triton, or in Reason. Playing around in Reason, I know I can achieve that same type of "authentic" drummer sound but its going to take some playing around and tweaking of the software. This is, however, just a phase I am going through at the time since I just got my hands on the Reason 2.0 Drum Kits.

I am yet to dive into this side of "drumming" (lol).  I have to get into drum machines and the Roland SPD-S first.

I HAVE BEEN LISTENING TO A LOT OF PEOPLE WHO TRY TO ACCOMPLISH THE REAL SOUND AND I AM NOT WORRIED ABOUT THE KEYBOARDISTS AND PRODUCERS WHO ARE NOT DRUMMERS B/C THEY WIL NEVER- NEVER GET THE FEEL AND CREATIVITY RIGHT.... CLOSE BUT NOT CLOSE ENOUGH SO YOU PEOPLE WON'T WIPE US REAL DRUMMERS OUT

THE ONES TO LOOK OUT FOR ARE THE PRODUCERS AND TRCKERS WHO ARE OR WERE DRUMMERS B/C THEY UNDERSTAND THE FEEL AND VARIETY OF EVERY LICK SO THEY/WE WILL BE MORE ABLE TO ACCOMPLISH THE SOUND. BUT I AM NOT WRRIED ABOUT THESE POEPLE WITHER B/C 1- I AM ONE OF THEM AND 2- THEY WON'T BE OUT TO REPLACE DRUMMERS B/C THEY ARE DRUMMERS AND THEY UNDERSTAND THE EFFECT AND POWER OF REAL DRUMS AND THE FACT THAT IT'S IMPOSSIBLE TO REPLACE THAT....

sorry to bring this back but i just had to say that...... ;D
