I'm actually on the fence with this, too. I mean, I can see how this would strike fear in the hearts of session drummers. At the same time, it IS a business, and it does cost less to program than it does to hire a session drummer. Furthermore, the average person buying these records aren't musicians, and they really can't tell the difference. Even if you told the average person it wasn't a real drummer, I doubt they'd be bothered by it, in the least...
...and Sabe, the reason why this works, is because so much "canned" music is being made. It's easy to replace a drummer in the studio when the drummer's part sound so inorganic. That's why I'm so intrigued by what Robert Glasper & Chris Dave does ...
...it wouldn't make since to program those parts, because the POINT of that music is for MUSICIANS to experiment & vibe. This artificial jive that's being created .... doesn't really move, and in that case, you don't need an actual drummer.
So, yeah --- I'm on the fence.
