Your going to want to start learning some basic theory. When you hear other bass players play you will understand what they are doing and it will help you to retain. Read the thread post at the top of the board. "Never stop learning" Even if you dont understand it all it will all sink in the more you learn theory here and from other sites.
Vision without action is just day dreaming. I miss practicing.

Hey Braylyn, maybe you should really consider praying before and after to pick up your axe and those books that you can't seem to understand. The Spirit is the revealer of ALL things.  Watch God move your fingers as you play. God is indeed able.

I agree

If I were you I would also get with other musicians (not just bass players) to learn gospel progressions and theory. I would listen to jazz, and spend as many hours that you can afford to dedicate to Practice. Finger excercises are essential if you want to be able to step up your game. I was in the same boat as you, but once I locked down the fundamentals what I did was just started playing in services and rehersals and using that time to learn from other musicians. But out of everything that I just said, my personal practice time has helped the most.

..IF YOU WANT TO GET BETTER....SET GOALS AND STICK TO THEM.....SHORT TERM GOALS....AND LONG TERM GOALS....

FOR EXAMPLE...I WANT TO LEARN HOW TO SLAP....GO FIND A RECORDING OF SOMEONE WHO SOUNDS THE WAY YOU WANT TO SOUND!

PICK THE SONG THAT YOU LIKE...AND LEARN THE SONG  ONE PHRASE AT A TIME....YOU ARE NOT TRYING TO LEARN THE SONG...JUST THE VARIOUS PHRASES....

ONCE YOU LEARN A PHRASE JUST LIKE THE THE RECORDING ...APPLY IT TO THE MUSIC YOU CURRENTLY PLAY.....AND MOVE ON THE THE NEXT PHRASE!

DONT KEEP PRACTICING THE SAME STUFF OVER AND OVER...REMEMBER TO APPLY WHAT YOU LEARNED AND MOVE ON!

I'm with you on that. Over here in Korea, it's God that's teaching me how to play though, because some of this stuff I'm learning isn't on the books and tapes that I have.

B3 forgot to mention that God teaches him and Willie T cause he bites all my riffs and stuff.

Anyway to help you with some basic theory go to www.cyberfretbass.com.  You will have to study cause no one's going give you understanding.  I think the bible says something about studying 2 Tim 2:15.  Oh...but I thought that only applied to the word...no my friend...it said a "Workman need not be ashamed."  So just as the preacher studies for Sunday you have to study your craft.  This separates "bass players" from "bassist."

SO IM BASSICALLY SELF TAUGHT

This is good but not good enough. Find a teacher or get together with other bassist and see what you can pick-up from them. They will learn from you also ;). Learning by yourself won't take you far as learning with other people. I encourage you to pray and try to find someone to teach you something you don't know. God bless you bro. :)

Step 1:  Find an instructor or a practice buddy.  You will only think of the things you will think of.  I know that sounds overly simple, but we all get into ruts.  That is what you appear to be describing above.  Even Tiger Woods has a coach / instructor (talk about a high pressure job!)

Step 2:  Remove the caps lock  ;)

Peace,

James
