Don't *need* compression. Distortion does helps, but you should practice them clean--or on an acoustic.
BAsically, it just his--choke up on your pick. And use the round part, not the point. Basically, you want the fat of your thumb to hit the string right after the pick--with in milliseconds. Just dig into it. Then apply vibrato, that will keep it ringing.
Easiest to hit around the 3rd to 7th fret on the 3rd through 6th strings.
