Forgive me for asking, but what is a pinch harmonic? ?/?

Pinch harmonic is a technique where the picking hand's nail or thumb lightly touches the string after it is plucked producing a high pitched sound.  Check out the following link:

been working on pinch harmonics too.....the techinque sounded simple(of course its not :o)I just noticed that alot of guitar solos i hear in gospel today utilize heavymetal techniques(a prime example is the song "I Want It All Back" by Tye Tribett &GA on the Victory CD) so now im trying to learn those techniques.....i neva know....one day i could be a saved version of Steve Vai
Go to a store and buy an Ibanez.......

Depending on your eq and distortion settings, you can often play pinch harmonics without even trying.  As a matter of fact, you can get pinch harmonics even when playing clean (a compressor would help make them more prominant).

which eq settings would be ideal for pinch harmonics? ?/?

how will a compressor help ?/?

how much will a compressor cost  ?/?

since we are on the subject, where can I get a resonably priced powered pedal board  ?/?

Don't *need* compression.  Distortion does helps, but you should practice them clean--or on an acoustic.

BAsically, it just his--choke up on your pick.  And use the round part, not the point.  Basically, you want the fat of your thumb to hit the string right after the pick--with in milliseconds.  Just dig into it.  Then apply vibrato, that will keep it ringing.

Easiest to hit around the 3rd to 7th fret on the 3rd through 6th strings.

Maybe I can get a vid up tonight--I don't plan on turning in anytime soon anyhow.

I'll see what I can do.

You should develop a technique good enough to play pinch harmonics on an acoustic. You don't need distortion or a compressor or anything, you just need your pick and your thumb and sometimes you don't even need a pick.  ;)

The key is to choke up on the pick so that very little of the tip is showing, then pluck the string and in an immediate follow-through motion allow the skin of your thumb to brush along the string, creating a harmonic of the picked note.
Music theory is not always music reality.

Okay, I got a quick and dirty vid up on myspace.  I have somehow become obsessed with the video stuff.  Y'all should see the stuff I have of my daughter that I haven't doctored up yet.

Anyway... back to the subject.  Go to www.myspace.com/jayp5150 and check out the video page (click under my picture), and it should be in there.

It's still processing, but should be accessible soon.  Let me know if that helped at all.  And, no, that's not my church tone!  That's the 5150 on the lead channel, but the amp's across the room, so the sound's not stellar.

you can get different harmonics depending on where you pinch the string (vary your hand position in relation to the bridge)

you can pinch without changing the way you hold your pick, it's all what works for you. we all have our own ways of accomplishing something.

Yeah, I completely forgot to mention that (about the different harmonics in relation to hand potition).  Thanks.

Also, I wasn't saying that you had to hold your pick that way, that's just the way I've always picked, and to me it seems eaiser--but that's probably because I've never done it any other way!  I'm glad this helped someone at least--I was about half asleep when I did it.

God bless.

i know man, i hope it didn't sound like i was doggin the way you do it, not at all........that's why i said we all do things our own way, what works for me may not be the best way for you. that's all i was trying to say.

Oh, I didn't think that at all--like gtrdave said, some folks hit these without a pick (Lindsey Buckingham comes to mind).  I just didn't want anyone to think that I was all "this is how it's done, period."  I was just saying that this is how I do it, your mileage may vary.

We are all pooling together here anyhow, so that we may all learn something new, different, or something that we may have just passed up along the way.

I think that my fatigue sometimes comes through in my typing! lol  I need to learn to use those stinkin' emoticons... :)

There, that's better.

God bless.

You are more than welcome.  I'm slowly becoming addicted to my camera.  I may get crazy and get a real one! (that's just my digital camera).

Hope it helped a little.

Also for someone learning to do pinch harmonics it is good to use the bridge pickup and add treble to your tone. This will make it easier to perform when you're just learning to do it. You will get the squeals that you desire to hear instantly. This will inspire you to work on it. Then just keep practicing it and before you know it, it will be easy.
