New to bass...any advice?
« on: September 26, 2006, 04:13:24 AM »
HELLO EVERYONE!!

The caption basically says it all... :D. I'm here because I need to connect with some likeminded people who can give me some insight into this next level in my journey with God...playing the bass is definitly something He has led me to do for ministry and it's time for me to focus more time and energy in into nurturing my gift. I can play a little by ear but I want and need to do more. So, if anyone has some advice,...words of encouragment...ANYTHING THAT WILL HELP, LOL...feel free to reach out to me...I'm a sponge for knowledge!...;D

Learn the fretboard. scales and arpeggios. Never stop improving playing by ear and learn to read music and theory.

Never put your bass before GOD. Pray about what it is you want and keep on trying and one day you will have it.

Welcome to LGM, bassbaby.  There is a wealth of knowledge in this forum.  Uriah has many clips of lessons.  I've only been playing for a year and a half, but I will tell you somethings that have helped me.  The book "Bass Guitar for Dummies" has helped me alot.  Practice as of often as you can, but have some structure for skills you want to work on.  Many times I take my bass without connecting to my amplifier and do exercises to build on fingerboard familiarity, speed, endurance, and dexterity.  Also, play with other musicians as much as you can.

Welcome to LGM bassbaby!!!    It's good to see more and more sistahs joining on the low end of the board  ;D

I don't know how new you are with the bass.  Do you have anything specific you need advice on??  There's plenty that has been posted over the years on this board.  If you do a search on some specific keywords you would most-likely find your answer.  Here is a bit of advice to start you off:

*  do daily finger exercises ... to train alll your fingers (including miss pinky) ... the Bass Fitness book has tons of these exercises
*  use a metronome when practicing
*  learn your scales ... know your fretboard
*  watch uriah's videos lessons on this site:  http://www.learngospelmusic.com/bass/video.php
*  be on the look-out for sheds (jam sessons) in your area ... you're in DC and they have plenty between there and Baltimore ... when I hear of them, I post it here ... check the dummer forum too.  I've been to ones in Lanham & Baltimore.  Warning:  Be sure to be well rested cause it's an all night thing  ;D ... Whether you play there or not, it's great motivation to grow to the next level of your playing ... of course, you also get to network with other local church musicians and musicians that play for gospel artists
*  check out activebass.com for plenty, plenty of exercises/lessons
