[The Concept]

This thread is only for those who want to experience a small taste of St. Louis stlye gospel music.
Although our style since then is way more advanced and has greatly changed, we base our playing on many of the same techniques.

This clip was recorded in 1998 and is deemed a "ST. LOUIS CLASSIC". Taken from a live recording CD by the phenomenal Elder Gregg Haynes entitled "Live and Direct".It features some of St. Louis's finest musicians and vocalists with direction/ production work by

Butch Woodie- Music Director/ Keys
Rob Woodie- Asst. Music Director/ Drums
Levi "TOO" King- Producer
Carenso "Cory" Ivy- Producer/ Vocals
Jeremy Haynes- Drums/ Gregg's nephew

In between the furious licks and riffs traded between Gregg Haynes and Donald Haynes, Gregg breaks the music just enough to give "Butch" Woodie a solo.
After Butch's, cloud nine, keyboard solo he then moves to the organ to bring everybody back down to earth by giving the crowd a little old school C.O.G.I.C. feel.

  I wouldn't take nothin' for the holyghost!! Now that's the kind of shout that will get you out of your seat....Nothing against the the new shouts these days because I love them, but it's something about those foot-stompin', hand clapping shouts like this one...Thanks for the post Concept

Thanks alot for the clip Concept.  I'm encouraged to buy the album.....that dude can play!  However...be honest man.....doesn't he do crazier shouts on Sunday mornings?  That was a nice traditional shout, but after what I heard what he can do to a hymn, he HAS to do more with a shout.  Please reply..........

I don't know man.  I've heard so much about how OTHERWORLDLY Butch is on the Organ, and that clip didn't show me that.

Good, yes.  He was nice and clean, but he didn't really do anything to make me say     

Perhaps he was just playin it cool for the sake of the recording? 

I want to believe that butch is the truth.  I do.

Man, I can't take time off of work, spend the money to make my way down to N.O. , just to hear somebody who people TELL me are spectacular.   

If this guy is truly awesome, why can't anyone prove it?

I can't answer that, rjthakid. I really can't answer that. I only know what I heard with my own two ears, and saw with my eyes. The boy has alien blood in him. You know he had to be on another level for me to make to be talking this way; and you know how much I hate admitting I'm wrong, lol...

....and to be honest, I think he's the type to underplay, just because people are expecting him to show off.

NO ONE EVER SAID ST. LOUIS IS THE BEST KEPT SECRET FOR GOPSEL MUSICIANS!!!

Yeah everyone's  right about the organ shout solo being a "little" ordinary.
BUT PLEASE don't get it wrong... BUTCH IS WAY BETTER THAN THAT CLIP (POINT BLANK)!!!!! If any good organist studied that clip enough, they would definitely be able to play it note from note themselves, But thats only because he played "commercial" that night.  What you would do after church and during sheds you DEFINITELY CAN NOT DO DURING A RECORDING!

Especially coming from Butch.

If he had played outside the box, as what he is infamous, for it would have thrown everything off.
You still have to keep in mind people were shouting, so he played only what would fit. (and I can appreciate that)

And in response to MAESTRO DIVINE saying, "Butch sometimes underplays because everyone expects otherwise" YOU ARE DEFINITELY RIGHT!!!!!

Even in church services, when he plays, unless  the flow is "right" he won't upset the mode by playing out the box.

PRIME EXAMPLE:  I was there the night they taped him on showmethat.com. They had just done altar call, and the worship song of choice was the hymn, "IT IS WELL", the spirit was high, they dismissed the church, but many were still worshipping in the sanctuary. Sebastian (director of showmethat.com) walked to the organ and asked him to play something like some crazy chords and riffs, but because the spirit was still present, Butch politely said, "the spirit is still moving". Thus holding back and still playing the hymn that was originally sung. That clip was definitely not a "come and show off so I can tape you kind of clip".

You have to remember Butch is a minister so, I'm sure he recognizes that people marvel at the way he plays, but he would rather be remembered and appreciated for his annointing and ministry!!!!

The fact that he's a musician and not a chop-artist is commendable.

My only issue is, no one outside of Nawlens has been able to testify of his talent (outside of Div).

It seems he will remain the best kept secret in Gospel, because no one can post a clip of him doin sick stuff.

Haha!  Baltimore/DC has some of the best musicians, but I can get their clips quicker and easier than any clips of St. Louis' musicians.  I have a musician friend in E. St. Louis who has never heard of Butch!
