Harmonic Major Scale!
« on: August 11, 2006, 09:59:26 AM »
I just learned the name of this scale this scale the other day. It's called the Harmonic Major Scale.

C, D, E, F, G, Ab, B, C.

I use it over a 5 chord.

I hope this blesses you and your music ministry.

When the minstrel played, the hand of the LORD was upon him.  II Kings 3:15

Hello again everyone.  I feel your prayers and have every since I posted last.  Thank you all.  I don't know what muziq means when he says he is playing that scale over a five chord.  I am still learning and theory has really been helping me.  I am going to post my playing shortly but I have to get up on the technology.  I am just going through these old post trying to get some knowledge.

Me neither, muziqmann has to give us an example using a 5 chord, cuz it don't sound like it fit to me, unless you have a Bb in there:

C, D, E, F, G, Ab, Bb

In order to make this go good with a 5, you have to play this backward, then end on a 5, like this:

Key C  LH/RH

Version 1:

Both hands:  Ab, G, F, E, D, C, Bb, Ab
G / G-C-E (5)

Version 2:

Both hands:  Ab, G, F, E
D / A-C-F
C / B-D-G
Bb / Bb-Db-E-G
Ab / Ab-C-D-F
G / G-C-E (5)
Real musicians play in every key!!!

In the Scale Syllabus of Jamie Aebersold Jazz Handbook (free on http://www.jazzbooks.com/miva/documents/handbook/13_scale_syllabus.pdf)  It indicates that a Harmonic Major scale would be used with a Maj 9 chord (generally I or IV or a temporary I or IV).  The main thing in the Harmonic Major is the A lowered to Ab giving the characteristic sound (the Augmented 2ndof the upper half of the Harmonic Minor Scale.)

A harmonic major scale is a major scale with a flat sixth.
1-2-3-4-5-b6-7-(1)

Ex.
C harmonic major scale
C-D-E-F-G-bA-B-(C)

A C harmonic major scale can be used over a couple of chords.

Ex.
C Major
P/LH/RH

D/FACE/GACE
G/FAbBE/B, Ab, G, F, E, D, C, B, Ab, G, F, E, D, (5 chord)
C/EABD/C

another example is at http://destined.to/playgospelkeys.

This would be called a melodic major or hindu scale.
