Lack of respect for Female Musicians Part II
« on: September 29, 2006, 10:17:57 AM »
Some of y'all might of replied or heard about this topic in da Organ room..... But I juz wanna hear your inputs and thought, on this...

It's like if a female gets on an instrument at church, it's like "oohhh well, they're probably okay",or,"I dont think they can playTHAT good." (Spaeking from my experiences with other guys at my churches...)

But here's my story ( I shared this story in da 1st part in da organ room as "Organ Man 1990)

A while ago, earlier this year, I had a state convocation than lasted from monday to Sunday (For COGIC peeps y'all know what this iz)
Well on Friday night, women's night (also midnight musical), I wuz playin with the othe dudes up there and i had this crush on this nicely shaped lightskinned girl,  i had to ask for her name (dont worry she's my age), she said it was Sondra(A great name for a great lookin girl), as she sat down on da eletric piano, while i was on the Keyboard, I was thinkin maybe she didnt really play as good as us.

Well, I thought wrong, When they started playing some hand clappin devotional music she was flyin, i had to get myself together cuz i was juz lookin silly too y'all. I told her after church(transitioning to midnight musical) man i didnt really know you play like that, and well i gave her her props (about playing and how she looks  :P) and well, she kinda gave me her number BUT I AINT GOING TA GET IN ALL DAT!!!! If any thing attracts me more, It's a light skinned african american female who play music.

With me it's just the opposite.  I would LOVE to see a female who plays an instrument, know matter if she is good or not.  I get tired of seeing other dudes play, I want to see some females.

Glad to hear you say that, Keys.... I'm a female pianist/keyboardist and have experienced "that look" from male musicians that I'd never met. Our church visited another church recently where their musicians were doing all the music until it was time for our Praise Team/singers to go up. When I went to the keyboard, they (keyboardist and pianist) looked at each other like "what she think she 'gon do...". And they looked at me like "you sure you got this, little lady?" And the pianist stayed in place like I was gonna need help! Yes, I was offended.... but as I played my stuff, I'm could see them bobbing their heads and giving each other the eye like "she good, man, she good..." There may not be a lot of women musicians out there on DVDs like J. Griggs and J. Hartwell, etc., but we're on the front lines just like the men---we're skilled and anointed, just like the men! Amen?

tickler33us - You really had me fooled until I got about 3/4 of the way through your post.  I was thinking, "Is this guy kidding?  Does he really think that we don't know who Cassandra O'Neal is?  And, is he really engaged to her?"  Oh, well...  I guess I was just being naive.  But, there's an old song that says, "Dreams can come true.  It can happen to you..."  God bless.

I can appreciate your comments.  I'm a female musician, and the male musicians always critic me. I get comments like-Ooh you got some nice chords- you tight.  So, it's great to get some support and respect.  Thanks!!!

Hey Keyz410: why she got to be redbone, man?  :)  lol I'm light skinned too ...real light!! But anyway, I am not only a musician with skills and anointing on the keyboard and drums but I also produce my own music, write my own songs plus I'm a Gospel Rap Artist.  I know what it's like to be looked down on or played "over top of" by guys.  But it's all good though because I realize that my anointing is my anointing and my calling is my calling.  Props or no props I have to use this gift that God has given me.  It's not right and yes I do wish/pray that guys would get it out of their heads that males dominate the music industry/musicianship of the world and respect lady musicians.  It's alot of us out there and I believe in due time we will arise and God will put us out in the forefront because our gifts will make room for us.  Fellas get ready..soon we ladies will be having our own sheds!!!  Much love
I still believe~
