James abbington put out a Cd called 49 treasures of the AFrican American hymnal as its name suggests he has his choir singing songs right from the hymn book he plays piano hammon organ and pipe organ
the music is predominantly spirituals and anthems but there are a few worship songs in this album as well
check out my review in the gospel piano room for more information on this album
but in general james abingoton is a great source for spirituals and anthenms
The last site that val215 sent me was very helpful and moreover, I went upstairs in he music room At my new church and they have volumes of anthems and negro sprituals
a virtual gold mine of stuff
old old old from 1933 some of the stuff is really nice and kept well
o learned my first anthem today
they sound kind of folky and classical at the same time
I hope i can teach these seniors how to sing these songs on the beat with very strict adherence to time because if I dont htey will sound horrible.
once again thanks
to everyone

Try this CD:
Wade In The Water Vol. 1: African American Spirituals - The Concert Tradition CD
And, you could just try amazon.com or someplace like that. I'm sure you'll be able to find something.

For spirituals do a search on Moses Hogan, I'm not sure if you need CD's or sheet music but www.ntimemusic.com should have both of them.

I'm not too sure if this is what you're looking for, but I found this site that has anthems from all over the world. It has the actual sheet music, lyrics, midi, and audio. http://www.nationalanthems.info/ Hope that helps.

Oh ok...I gotcha. In that case, you might want to check out the arrangements by William L. Dawson. Click this link to listen to the samples: http://www.kjos.com/choral/dawson_spirituals_sounds.htm I looked through my old music and I do have the sheet music to "Ezekiah Saw De Wheel" it's like 15 pages long. I can send it to you some kind of way if you'd like. Just PM me if you're interested. I pray it's what you're looking for

i agree Moses Hogan is the best on spirituals. I have 2 of his books "Feel The Spirit" Volume One and Two. I was also fortunate to have been in a workshop choir that he conducted. He will be greatly missed.
