Just Sharing My Thoughts...
« on: October 02, 2006, 10:41:55 PM »
- I watched some Mahavishnu Orchestra clips yesterday; and even though I've never been high a day in my life, I felt high after watching 'em. Listening to other people's music rarely ever take me THERE anymore - but John, Billy & crew injected something addictive into my veins, lol. You guys need to check that stuff out. Everything I listened to, after that point, failed to measure up, lol. Of course, TMO may not be your cup of tea .. but, give it a go anyway, if you're interested...

- I'm gettin' a bass tomorrow. Five years ago, I would've never thought I'd be saying this ... but, now I am. Their are a lot of bassist's that are considered "great", but when I hear them, I don't feel much of anything. Great technique is one thing, but can you make it stir the waters of my soul? Ever since I started listening to Meshell Ndegeocello, I've been paying a lot more attention to the bass. It's ironic, 'cause I started listening to Meshell because of Chris Dave, but I don't really play drums anymore, but I'm now very interested in playing bass.

This is gettin' to be too much. I need to stop listening to music, lol. Listening to B.B. King was the reason I stopped playing drums, to pick up guitar. However, I found myself gettin' back into the drums again ... but, now it seems the drums are gonna be replaced by the bass. I can't seriously take up four instruments. Their is a certain amount of time that I MUST dedicate to each instrument .... and, it's just not possible to do that with four instruments. If their was 48 hours a day ... man, I'd probably be a one-man band. However, their isn't. Gotta make some sacrifices to dedicate the necessary amount of time each instrument. I know people will say it's not about how long you practice, but practicing efficiently ..... yadda, yadda, yadda .... lol .... I start to feel guilty when I feel like I'm sittin' on my butt and not practicing .... so, that's out of the question. Furthermore, I have this strong conviction about having too many "lovers". The more lovers you have, the less time you have to connect with each, I feel. Connecting with the instrument, for me, is everything & an ever evolving process of deeper understanding. Sooooo, I can just barely bring myself to take up three instruments, and not feel like I'm spreading myself too thin.

Alright, I'm done. Not exactly sure why I said all of this ...... I guess I just wanted to open up a little, and share my musical going on's with the fam...

...Mahavishnu Orchestra is the truth.  I have one of their CD's that I got from a friend that has their original (Vynil) recording.  They were totally ahead of their time.

I didn't know you play bass, man!

To be honest, it feels great to be a beginner again. Sure, I know all the theory, and my ear is very well developed ..... but, the bass is a beast that you have to tame! I'm ready, for sure...

You got any clips of you playing bass?

Man I feel you.  I'm on the drums and I'm DYING to switch over to the Organ.  I also play the Trumpet.  I was listening to that old Richard Smallwood song "Healing" (Balm in Gilead), and the Guitar was KILLIN!  Soon after I was on guitarcenter.com pricing guitars.   :D  :D  :D As I was playing it on the Organ I wished I could be on the drums at the same time.  I need to set up a snare next to the Organ so I can get my fix.

But I'm going to devote 90% of my time to practicing the Organ from now on.  I would rather been awesome on one instrument than merely adequate on 3.   :-\

Perhaps in 10 years or so I'll pick up the guitar.   :)

Dude, that is the biggest pet peeve of mine. I can't stand to see people who are really nice on one instrument, and mediocre on the other. If I'm gon' pick up and instrument, either I'm gonna attempt to master it, or not play it at all. I've been second guessing myself ever since I decided to buy a bass, for that same reason. I'm thinking to myself, "How much better can I be at lead and piano if I don't pick up bass?"

I don't know, man ..... we'll see.

I love drums, don't get me wrong. Drums are like an ex-girlfriend that you loved a lot, but you had to leave  her for whatever reason. You keep going back, 'cause you have too much history together .. to ever truly be done and finished with each other. At least for a while, anyway. I imagine, overtime, it get's easier to let go.

We fellowship with a Pastor who's like that.

He can play a LITTLE keyboard, a little bass, and a little (very little) drums.

He isn't good enough on any instrument to even be considered AVERAGE.  Me and my base player make fun of how he plays keys.  Every song sounds the same.  :D  :D  :D  He's one of those guys who can only play in C, and transposes to any other key.  I know a FEW guys like that.  It always bewilders me because C isn't the easiest key to play in.

Anyway, he's an example to me: If you try to be good at everything, you'll be great at nothing.

I feel you on that one.  Thats why I waited until I was ready to start playin the organ instead of when everybody else wanted me to.  I had to get comfortable enough on the set to do it now i spend 80% of my time on the organ, the rest on drums

You got any clips of you playing bass?

I rather play bass in Church cause I have to learn and try! Its also a different way to express yourself! There's a bunch of Cd's with me on bass but I dont have them....Im working on a deal with Dean Basses.
