A Girl Like Me....

Not sure if you guys have seen this video... but I found it interesting....

This is a video done by a 16 year old African American girl who was interested in how AA girls view themselves. Things like skin color, hair texture, etc. she also re-conducted the Kenneth Clark study regarding AA children and the choice between a Black doll and a White doll. I wanted to share this with you . The video is only about  minutes long.

Kiri Davis, 16, Urban Academy I wanted to make a film that explored the standards of beauty imposed on today's black girls. How do these standards affect her self-esteem or self-image. Through making this film I learned a lot about where some of these standards might stem from.

Very, very interesting.  I have to say that if the part where the children chose the dolls is a true sampling after all these years, I find that very disappointing.  However, in a way I guess it is not surprising but still very disappointing.  But in all honesty, I think that with the extremely high percentage of black women that augment their natural hair with weaves and hairpieces straight as a pin and hanging way past their shoulders, it does appear to me that true self acceptance and self appreciation has made a huge reversal in the past couple of decades.  I have made it very clear to my wife that absolutely nothing she can buy is as appealing and beautiful to me as the hair that God gave her in the way that He gave it to her.  And this is not just flowery words, it is the absolute truth.   I love the look and texture of her natural hair. Of course she like most women go to the salon regularly to get her hair 'did' but at least she knows where I stand.  From every poll I have every seen, the majority of black men prefer real hair to weaves.  It is puzzling to me that women seem to be oblivious to this.  Is it that it is easier to take care of? I don't know.
I am what God says I am, no less and no more.
