I just think so many people have pumped up Butch that some of us were expecting too much when this subject popped up...In all honesty, I think it was a solid clip and he did what he should have done on a recording...The clip on showmethat was enough for me to know that dude can definitely play...This clip was a clean, poised and anointed clip in my opinion...If the showmethat and this recent audio clip is all I can hear of Butch then so be it, I'm satisfied.....I definitely need to hear more of Mike Bereal, Derrick Jackson and Travis Sayles though...Does anybody have any more of those guys then what has already been posted???

God Bless

MAN, WHAT IS UP WITH THIS ROOM?

Just take this thread for what it's worth!
However, I do appreciate those who stayed respectful. (rp king)
I simply just tried to post something from St. Louis. Not just of Butch, but of other St. Louis musicians as well.
This thread is not in any way meant to say St. Louis is the best, or Butch is the best.
I just thought I would share a good clip with my fellow minstrels.
But "some" would still like to make this thread a competitive/sarcastic-like topic.

Haha!  Baltimore/DC has some of the best musicians, but I can get their clips quicker and easier than any clips of St. Louis' musicians.  I have a musician friend in E. St. Louis who has never heard of Butch! :D ?/?

If you read my threads carefully, you will note the important message at the bottom

-This thread is in no way meant to spark competition or controversy-

There's no such thing as the BEST musician or area. For us to label a specific city or person as the "BEST", would mean our God given gifts are biased! Meaning God only gives the better gifts to a specific area of people...
NO!

Music is based on interpretation. Thus having MANY unique styles and qualities... And because there's so many interpretations, whose to say my interpretation is better than yours or yours is better than mine.  Rather everyones has there own unique ability.

I never labeled Butch as the best (noone is the best), but as one of the most unique I've ever heard.

I REPEAT...
PLEASE LETS NOT MAKE THIS THREAD A COMPETITIVE/WHO"S THE BEST TOPIC!
RATHER JUST APPRECIATE THE CLIP!
[/u]

Thanks,  :)

Please do not be discouraged Concept...Like I said in my previous posts...I think it was a solid clip and I really enjoyed it, but some people on here expect so much when they hear the name "Butch" and go over board sometimes...I was most impressed with how Butch blended with the rest of the band...That's how it's supposed to be done right?? Even if some one had a clip of him by himself and it was the sickest clip ever, then some would say he is too busy, he runs too much, his chords are to muddy or I know someone better...I hate to say this but this will always happen, because someone decided to say he was "THE BEST" one day instead of just saying he is a very good and anointed musician....Keep postin' Concept...I would love to hear what he did with YES LORD!

God Bless

You're right Lockslie1.  Someone....Ok, a FEW people stated in the Organ Forum that Butch Woodie was the best thing since sliced bread, and that skewed our expectations.

Then Maestro Divine, who was just as skeptical as I was (am) went to St. Louis, heard him play, and came back wowed by his technique and musicality.  So I have high expectations.

Thanks for the post The Concept.

These expectations were set long before you got here man.  lol.  It's not a slight to you.  You're the only one who ACTUALLY posted a Butch Woodie clip.

The wait continues....

Yeah Travis is a monster....You know I still throw that Marvin Sapp Diary of a Psalmist Album in from time to time to hear Mike Bereal play the organ on Jesus(For there's something about that name)...The chords he was playing on that just about made me call 911 because I was wondering how he was still alive from being so SICK!! Plus, Derrick Jackson almost makes me break down with cold sweats...There are so many great organist out there...There is too much knowledge, and too many styles out here for someone to be labeled "THE BEST".

WELL, I SEE EXACTLY WHERE "THECONCEPT" IS COMING FROM WITH THIS POST. BECAUSE FROM ME KNOWING HIM PERSONALLY, I DON'T EVAN THINK THAT HE WOULD HAVE POSTED THIS CLIP TO TRY TO JUST SHOWCASE BUTCH. BECAUSE, IN MY OPINION THIS IS NOT ONE OF MY FAVORITE TIMES/MEMORIES OF HEARING BUTCH PLAY. NOW DON'T GET ME WRONG, FOR ST. LOUIS IT GOES DOWN IN THE RECORD BOOKS AS A CLASSIC. BUT FROM MY PERSONALLY TIMES OF HEARING BUTCH PLAYMEMORIES THIS IS NOTHING. I DON'T EVAN LIKE LISTENING TO IT ANYMORE BECAUSE I KNOW THE WHOLE TRACK BY HEART. I CAN EVAN PLAY BOTH SOLO'S. (im not trying to brag b/c i still suck on the organ/keys. i'm just proving a point)

AND ALSO I WANT TO ADDRESS SOMETHING ELSE BEFORE I FORGET. I KNOW FROM MY PREVIOUS POST'S AS "CATRON" A LOT OF YA'LL PROBABLY REMEMBER ME SAYING THAT I THINK THAT BUTCH IS THE SICKEST ORGANIST ALIVE. ( i really hate going back on my word but, i'd rather go back on my word than lie about something) AND FOR ALL OF THE ST. LOUIS PEOPLE, NOTHING HAPPENED BETWEEN ME AND HIM. WE ARE STILL COOL AND I THINK I CAN CALL ON HIM WHEN I NEED GUIDENCE. (i haven't got to that point yet but, if i do we'll see.) AND HE IS STILL MY MENTOR ON THE ORGAN. (there is a difference)

WELL I HAVE TO DISCLAIM THAT. I NO LONGER THINK THAT BUTCH IS THE SICKEST/MOST TALENTED ORGANIST ALIVE. AND ACTUALLY HE'S NOT MY FAVORITE ORGANIST ANY MORE. (man, this is hard for me to say. lol) NOW, DON'T GET ME WRONG, I STILL THINK THAT HE IS THE BEST COMING OUT OF ST. LOUIS. AND I THINK HE'S GOING TO HOLD THAT CROWN FOR A VERY LONG TIME. BUT, NOW I HAVE FOUND A GREAT TRADITIONAL ORGANIST THAT KILLS IT EVERY TIME I HEAR HIM. AND THAT IS DEACON EDWARD SHOWERS FROM CHICAGO, ILL. SOME OF YOU ALL PROBABLY HAVE HEARD OF HIM BEFORE. AND IF YOU HAVE YOU ALL SEE WHERE IM COMING FROM. AND THE THING I LOVE MOST ABOUT HIM HE ACTUALLY PLAYS ACCORDING TO THE SERVICE. AND THATS REALLY ALL THAT COUNTS FOR ME.

SORRY TO DISAPOINT ANYONE IF I DID. BUT HEY, TO BAD ON YOUR PART.

sorry for the long post.

I met Butch one Sunday Evening in St. Louis at Kennerly Temple.  Boy, was I in awe.  He played in A natural, I can play in A natural, but my God he Kilt-ed-ed it!  I will never forget.  He played "He never Failed me Yet"! Mmm Mmm Mmm.  And with all that he was so humble!  He played some shouting chords in Bb, I was like Oh my God!  Butch, he da man!  May God continue to use him!

The fact that he's a musician and not a chop-artist is commendable.

My only issue is, no one outside of Nawlens has been able to testify of his talent (outside of Div).

It seems he will remain the best kept secret in Gospel, because no one can post a clip of him doin sick stuff.

I will tell rjthakid why u may never hear Butch the way ever one is talking, you ready? here it is a seasoned-musician.  Butch has nothing to prove to anybody. He has been playing for years so to compare that clip to Travis' is not fair Travis is 20, Butch is older.  I'm pretty sure when Travis gets older he won't be as flashy.  It's something you learn as a musican as time goes on.  he's not going to lose any sleep and can care less if you hear what your looking for or not.  I have personally heard the unbelievable stuff everyone is talkin about and I know him as a person.  Chops and tricks come a dime of dozen.  But the way u balance both puts u in a different class that's why Butch is my favorite.

Why does everyone seem to be hatin' on Butch!  He's just a gifted musician. I heard that John Pee Kee asked him to play for him and that he told J Pee Kee that he would not play for someone so arrogant!   The brother is just well rounded and just awesome.  I will never forget Butch Woodie.  You can always drop by Kennerly Temple and check him out.  Course his father told me at the time that he was playing for some big Baptist church there in St. Louis.  I give him his props!  Go head Butch!
