Well if you're using XP, then I would suggest trying to find cakewalk or cooledit pro.

On the real, I would suggest using a Mac when doing recording, but then that's a lot more money you would have to put out.

WELL I REALLY WOULDN'T SUGGEST A CERTAIN PROGRAM FOR YOU BECAUSE, USUALLY PEOPLE USE WHATS COMFORTABLE FOR THEM. BUT, I USE FRUITYLOOPS, NUENDO, AND REASON.

I USUALLY USE FRITYLOOPS AND REASON INSIDE OF NUENDO AS A PLUGIN, THIS WAY I CAN HAVE MORE SOUNDS THAT I WOULD BE ABLE TO USE.

I HOPE THIS HELPS.

it depends on your setup... people tend to lean on mac's becuse some professional has laid claims to it... and somehow it became a standard... just like the word "pro-tools"

you can get audio-based pc's & software that will do the job just as fine... You will be more flexible with a PC but Most beginners and novices won't know the difference between the a mac and pc...

do your research on google and compare the difference some believe that Mac's are more stable and reliable than PC's which can be argued... however, most people who own mac's really know their way around computers so they are less lilkely to crash their computers

but write out what you are trying to do.. and then do research from that angle... and you might end up saving a few bucks ;)

Hi, I had the same problem choosing between PC and MAC. I chose IMAC "20" for recording and I use my PC for everthing else. I find that the MAC is better because I only use if to record and I have protools. I can go anywhere in any professfinal studio and load my work into theirs so It depends on what you are trying to do. See my post under jfj007 for my equipment. I got alot of good advice from this site but it still was my decision and it was hard at first but I am happy with my choice.

If you are using XP with the factory-installed soundcard, and want to do some basic stereo  recordings like from keyboard to computer then I would recommend using Steinberg's Wavelab- it works on any hardware, and it is packed full of effects, plugins and tools that make it easy to get into computer-based recording & mastering... your cost=$100. If you want to do multi-track com[ositions, try Cakewalk's Homestudio XL- it puts more of a strain on your hardware, but is also an easy to learn program. cost=$150. Hopefully this can help you some, thought I would recommend a more advanced soundcard for your pc if you end up getting real serious about your recordings. Also, for less than $20 you can by cables to hook a keyboard (or anything) with stereo outputs to the line input of your sound card.

Good luck!!!!

I'm just curious... Please answer this honestly.

I see alot of expensive programs:

Reason
Sonar(Cakewalk)
Cool Edit
Nuendo
Fruity Loops

How many of you have LEGAL LICENSES for these programs

I'm not the pot calling the kettle cause I'm guilty myself of using a free copy when I don't have the money to get the real deal.

I have a long way to go with this to get victory.... I'm sure I'm not alone ::) :o

I use Cubase SX.  Whatever you get, if you decide to use virtual instruments as well, make sure you have enough RAM to run it all.  Plus you will need a pretty nice size hard disk drive to hold the audio files.  Also, it is suggested that you get an external hard drive to back up your files in case anything happens to your PC/MAC.  Also, you can transport/resave your audio files on the external drive when you take it somewhere else to work on another PC for simplicity's sake.
When you've done your very best, do even better.

True, a lot of music software is pirated... I am guilty in the past of using software that I never bought... but now, my main programs (Cakewalk SONAR 6 and Steinberg Wavelab) I bought myself and I own the CD's and everything.

I am a believer in the try before you buy so I mostly download the demo's of any program I use. Of course there is an occasion where I might have tried a copy once or twice but the only 2 programs I use, Pro Tools and Reason were bought legitimately (thanks to a wonderful, supportive wife.)

Cakewalk Home Studio 2: Legal license, check
FL Studio Producer 6: Legal license, check
Cubase LE, Legal license, check

Those are the three I use.  No pirate production for me!  ;D Don't mess around with cubase too much; I just use the plugins for mastering.  FL Studio is GREAT for making hip hop, r&b, reggae, reggaeton... you know, the more loop-based type of music.  Cakewalk Home Studio 2 is Awesome for recording vocals, guitar, mics, and keyboard.  That is, of course, if you have a soundcard with multiple ins/outs.

I would sell it and save up money for a Mac with the intel chip inside if you are going to get into using recording software. Either that or DONT GET ON THE INTERNET WITH IT!

BUT IF YOU INSIST ON KEEPING IT, lol Sonar 6 is what I would use. I used Sonar until I got delivered from PC. But you have to determine whats best for you and if it is going to satisfy your expectations. Sonar is an excellent program!

I started recording on a mac, then switched to a PC.  Big mistake, crash, crash, restart, restart.  Couldn't get anything done.  I'm back home now, got me one of them mac pro quads with four cores.  I'm flying now, it even comes with recording software, garageband, it's pertty cool too. Real simple, easy to use, and doesn't get in the way.
It even runs windows too, but why bother.  I don't need the headache.  Can't beat a Mac for recording, been using them for 20 years now.
