You can't have it both ways when you are trying to get your name out there and work. Some jobs may be boring, but that boring job may get you more work in a genre you enjoy playing. For instance, I can't stand playing 12 bar blue gigs. Last week I got a call for a New Orleans musicians benefit for the musicians who were devastated by Katrina. It was that 12 bar blues stuff, I can't stand 12 bar blues. Anyway, I took the gig without even tripping. That one gig got me 2 jazz gigs this week for some real good $$$$. Today I had 3 gigs, one jazz ( from that same blues gig), one hip hop gig, and my job at Gemini. I got another one from the blues job on tues. which is a dixieland jazz style gig and a hip hop job on weds. It all works out so swell when you stay open-minded and forget about what you want to play and just play what available for you at the moment. Man, I play country gigs, rock gigs, R&B, Gospel, Hip Hop, Dixieland, Latin,Teach students at a private school and most of my students are females. I have 2 males students... If you want to get "discovered", you gots to work jobs you my not like. You may miss your blessing by only wanting to play a certain style. Now, if it's that devil metal stuff then forget it. You know what good for and what isn't. Go out and work if you want to be a professional drummer...
