Chris Coleman is so beyond the folks in this clip in skill set and knowledge base. I don't think that he should be mentioned in this conversation. Chrics has proven himself. Drum-Off National Champ. Graduating with Honors from The Drum Collectivce in New York. Going on to study bass and instruct drums at the Atlanta Institute of Music. Chris is a skilled musician with the wisdom and knowledege to apply it and his future places him in the path to greatetness as those Greats you mentioned. Totally different class than this clip.

(Nothing against the guys in this clip at all.)

We have to be careful that we don't let our lack of knowledge let us get so wowed that we set ourselves up for diisappointment. A good as they are at what they do as of yet these guys have not made any significant contributions to the craft of drumset playing. Gerald and Aaron have helpled bring gospel music to the forefront of the drumming world with thier performance at MD Fest 2006. Aaron getting this years Best Up and Comer Award is tremendous for the urban market. His fill at the Usher/James Brown performance made people stand up and take notice... However, these things didn't really affect drumset playing. So we have to be more conscious of putting folks on pedastals way before their time and stealing their licks without understanding. We end up showing a lack of appreciation....
Seems like preconceived expectations got the best of some of you.

Yeah. Why?

you said something that he talked about. he mentioned where he could have gone on stage and played every lick he knew at the modern drummer festival but it wouldnt have made people bob thier heads

Dude, I'm going to be honest. I was a Gerald fan way back in the early 90's; I haven't heard much growth in Gerald's playing since, then. I stopped feeling him back in '98 for that same reason, and it seemed nothing has changed.

I still stick to my statement that im bored and tired especially of thomas lang maybe not weckl, but lang is strictly about independance but his grooves are stiff and boring. For a real example of independance drumming go and get the modern drummer video with Horacio El Negro, HE IS THE TRUTH when it comes to independance grooving.

...did you say, "El Negro". ;D  Now we're talking sir.  He is a great inspiration to me and so is his boy Robby Ameen.  No one on this board knows a thing about Robby though.  The guy is a true beast.  It's cool though, he's working and getting paid.

That's what im talking about.....If were gonna talk independance and technique it's still gotta groove, and EL Negro is Laying it down. Alot of times Thomas just sounds too stiff for me!!!!! Alot of church musicians and singers get gigs just based on there ability to groove, yet alot of so called "schooled" musicians end up sheding in there basement for life LOL. Why? cause the groove is more important. Doesn't matter what technique you use once you get the job done and the music grooves and that goes for any Genre, rock jazz, hiphop, gospel etc. Put Gerald Aaron Brian Eric and them in thomas's gigs and they'd swim, Put Thomas lang in a church situationa and im at least a little sure he'd sink lol. Technique can be taught but groove is in the soul!!!

i have to agree a little bit

to be honest i do get amazed by a lot of rock drummers and stuff but most of them are boring to me b/c of the same reason..... and to me they start sounding the same just like in the r&b/urban genres.... even in thier grooves and how they play em'......and thier solo chops get machine-like and stiff too (to me)

i like benny greb- while we're talking about people with technique independence AND groove... that dude just does something to me- i really really like his playing

I appreciate the post.  I had never seen this clip and I'd never seen Gerald in a shed.
It's kinda hard to appreciate the intricacies of what they were playing because of the quality and the volume, but I'm still impressed by the quicknees of these cats.
