High Action
« on: November 04, 2006, 01:00:51 PM »
I have a Schecter Elite 5. I got it use from Ebay.

In all I think its a nice bass. I actually really like.

I think the action in the lower part of the neck is a bit high.

But since this is my fist bass I really dont know...So how hight should the strings be from the neck?

first off CONGRATS On the fine instrument!!!

Now the action can be howerver you prefer.  If you want to lower it you can adjust the sadle at the bridge with an allen wrench.  Pretty much just loosen up the bols in the sadde (the black part that the string sits on) until you get the string to reach the height you like.

I just to play mine a little high in the upper registers and for me it was fine.  I'm now experimenting with lower action all the way across.  So far I'm a fan of the lower action as it takes much less effort to slide and fret the notes in the upper registers.

Loosening the saddles is the first step and easiest if your neck action is fine. Sometimes the truss rod needs adjusting to  increase or decrease neck bow. In fact I just replaced the strings on my Yamaha TRB5 and lowered the saddles. I like my action really low especially for slapping.

So I do see the the next is a bit bend...And it is really bothering me. I do not see the place where I would be able to adjust the neck... Can I do this my self or should it be done by a Pro?

Thanks,
Dani

the neck should have a bow or as you put it a "bend" in it.  Try adjusting the saddles first to see if you cna lower the action without adjusting your bow.

If you can't get your action low enough without buzz that way then take it in to a pro to get the trussrods adjusted.
