Rack Cases
« on: November 04, 2006, 04:58:21 PM »
I have a Gk 1001rb and i was about to buy a rack case today at the music store

The GK itself is a 2 space and so was the rack case however someone, who didnt work at the store, tols me that i should leave one space of space between the amp oand case. (Basically i should buy a three space

But what i want to know is how important really is this extra space between thee amp and the case ?

It's very important because you want as much ventilation as you possibly can.

No need for a second input! Get one of these. I use one. I love it. You can set it up for silent tuning, muting or configure it to output 2 signals!

Looks like DW already answered your question.  Ventiliation is VERY IMPORTANT.  With the GK1001RB, the vents are on the top, so you have to leave SOME space.  My GK came with its own rack bag.  Even though I added a tuner to the bag, there is still enough room (barely) to vent the head.

My other rig uses a Crown Xs500 power amp and an Alembic pre-amp.  Since the Crown vents in the rear, I don't have to have any space on top to vent.

DW, I may have to invest in that A/B switch.

Peace,

James

A nice rule of thumb, if it is an amp give thoughts into venting like leaving a space. You can find 1 space spacers that can be put in the empty spaces that still allow venting and gives a clean look.

May I also suggest that you avoid the SKB cases in favor of the Anvil style? The latches on the SKBs do not hold up well, and the fronts are forever falling off.  I have never had that happen even with a cheaper Anvil style case.

One of the Lawrence stores handles them, but I haven't any personal experience with them.  There's an outfit in Arkansas that has an Ebay store that makes very good cases for reasonable prices. (OSP cases through Sigler Music)  I have heard nothing but good about them and again, very reasonable.

Also, the SKB case, and the Gator comes in both an Anvil style and an SKB style, is a sturdy case, the problem is the latches.  Any case that has similar latches would certainly get a pass from me.

Ohhhhh, now that I understand can you explain the difference between' "Anvil style and SKB style"?

The SKB is a plastic molded unit while the Anvil style is the one that looks like a very heavy duty wooden box.  (Anvil and SKB are both manufacturers and you can google them for pictures of their products).  The key is the latch.  I have yet to see an SKB latch that didn't get wimpy over time.  The next thing you know your amp is banging around with the rest of your equipment with all of its knobs exposed.

If your amp is going to face some real exposure to getting banged around, I'd strongly consider one of the shockmount units in the Anvil style.

In this picture, the SKB is on the left and the Anvil style is on the right.  My next mad money is going to replace the SKB case with one from OSP.

Thank you, and yes it is a monster tone.  I bought my WT800 from a friend who kept his SWR Bass 750 and sold me the 800 and the D410XLT.  Tonight he invited me out to a jam session he was hosting and I played through his rig.  There's simply no comparison.  It's not that it's bad equipment.  It has served him well, but the things you have to do to get a decent tone I just can't see doing anymore.  Both of those amps are set virtually flat.  I was actually running both those 410s off the Nav/1250 in bridged mono for this gig and even outside had a sound people could feel.  There is no substitute for headroom.
