Lower back pain
« on: November 06, 2006, 03:53:20 PM »
Are any/most/all of you dealing with this and what are you doing to resolve it.  I've been dealing with it in the recent weeks and I'm finally starting to get better through ab work and stretching.  I've also been trying to adjust my seat and snare to get more comfortable.

You?

Although I am not experiencing this matter, here are a few things I do know on the subject. Aerobics is the best exercise for the back, Taebo Live is a great one. Also, make sure you are resting at night on your side and not your back or stomach. You mentioned stretching, good continue doing that.

Sitting on a stool or bench

Sit up straight and maintain your lumbar curve to avoid the stress that leads to back pain. An easy way to do this is to make sure you are sitting on your "sit bones" (ischial tuberosites). You can feel these bones in your bottom when you tilt your pelvis back and forth while sitting. You can maintain proper posture without back support if you keep your weight over your sit bones, your back erect, and your chest out. This may feel awkward at first because it involves postural muscles that you're unaccustomed to using. But within a week or so, good posture will become a new habit.

Also sittin to low can also help cause lower back pain over time. vinnie coluita use to sit low to the ground back in the day it was even said in a article that he would cut off two inches off of the lowest drum stool. but then he started getting lower back problems.but once he brought his seat up not to high and not to low he has been better since so it is all about posture and seat height.  8)

You need to really take a look at ergonomics and reset you kit to fit your body. Not what you perceive but what really is. Dave Weckl - How To Devlop Technique DVD is an excelent start.

You also need to spend some real money on a real throne and replace it every year or so. Be in reality the cushion becomes less supportive after that amout of time. Get some thing with a back rest if you are big or you abs and lower back muscles are not strong. Or if you play for long periods on the daily.

Sit slightly above parallel so that hte weight rest in the hips and thigh s not the lower back. Also do upper back exercises and chest to keep the entire spinal column supported.

Yo man that's serious! If you have the money go to a musician doctor and find out whats going wrong! Look at how your butt rests in the seat, it could be putting stress on your lower spine! Spend the money and buy a high end Pearl seat and get a back rest with it. Also your sticks might be too short for the way you play causing you to over extend.....Anything under a 16 is too short!

Its simple...  Lower your seat height.  I was having the same problem until I dropped the height of my throne.  Simple as that.

That advice will cost you $26.30 after taxes  :)
