Acoustic Vs Electric
« on: November 24, 2006, 08:53:54 AM »
Is an acoustic strung (?) the same as an electric? E-E?
I was perusing Uriah's beginner video and was wondering because I plan on getting an acoustic soon after Christmas. Also I'm a 5"2 female, will a good guitar store "fit" me for a guitar?

Yup, the typical 6 string guitar is strung up E-A-D-G-B-E and what applies to electric can also apply to acoustic although there can be technique differences and there are definitely physical differences between the two.

For your size, you might find one of the "concert" or "grand concert" or "grand auditorium" sized guitars a better fit as opposed to a regular dreadnaught sized guitar.
My daughter plays a Takamine acoustic with a smaller sized body. She's 5'3" and that guitar fits her pretty well. My wife is about the same size and she, too, plays a smaller guitar, usually a classical size.

Get something that's comfortable.  There are many variations on full size guitars (different shapes, deeper bowls) in addition you can get a smaller size as Dave says.  Make sure you get something quality, you can find a good guitar that will last you a while if ever get serious, for the same price range as those beginner toys.

Go up to the Guitar Center, go into the Accoustic section and try out a Taylor T5.  It's an Electric/Accoustic guitar.  Light weight, thin body...I love mine.

A $2000 guitar might be out of the reach of some folks especially if they haven't been playing for too long.

Besides, one could get a similar quality guitar (less the pickup) in the Seagull SA-6 @ about $600. My wife's got the Godin version and bought it because of it's comfort, playability and sound.

the advice they giave is excellent you should play as many guitars as possible

i know it is hard because you may not play that much

but whatever you can play play it on the guitars in the store and whatever you can do easiest and that makes you sound the best no matter how limited you may be that is the guitar for you

some people spend hours and days going to the guitar store and trying differerent guitars

I'm looking at a roundback. I like that bodystyle. Its narrower. Only problem is I have to order it from Musicians Friend!!!  The Applause AA21 by Ovation. NOne of the stores around my area carry it.

Just a heads-up for anyone that would order from musicians friend:  I have never had any issues with them.  Always fast service, and good customer relations, but your guitar will most likely not be set up super-well.

I got my Dean acoustic from them (which I love, by the way), but it came to me with the same setup it had from the Dean factory (which was way too high for my style), so plan on taking it to your local shop for some setup work after you get it.  Not that it's a huge deal, as most of us probably would do this wth a brand new store-bought Fender or what-not, but a lot of people aren't aware of that.

Regardless, that's usually less than $30 for a good neck guy to tailor your guitar to you.

Good choice.  I love Ovations, they play very well, and the Applause line are excellent for beginners.

Ordering online is fine but, as has been said, you will need to take it to a local shop and have it set up before it will be really playable.

I just bought a martin  guitar set up by a guy named zager
apparently he is a wizard at setting up guitars and he usually works with martins

i just got mine and i am pretty impressed with the quality i payd 325 and it really sounds like a more expensive instrument

even if you dont buy one of his guitars you should check out his website he gets into how to care for acoustic guitars humidity and dryness and the effedt on the guitar
the importance of keeping the guitar in the case until it adjusts to the temperature etc

go to ebay and look up zager guitars contact seller and ask for a link to his website they will respond within 24 hours

Picked it up an hour ago. Unfortunately they didn't have it in ruby red but I had to settle for natural. :( I'll get busy with Uriah's Beginner's Video later this week!
