It aint all about you
« on: November 30, 2006, 12:31:54 PM »
A lot of musicians want to play slick phat chords and stuff that ministers to their own spirits.  but what about your congregaion.

I sat in my church listening to this old baritone sing some old old old song a song I would have never thought about really playing with any seriousness

but as I looked out over the congregation I saw about 12 old women throughout the church just rocking really feeling the spirit moving.

I f I never play this type of music then They will be left out of the annointiing.

I realized then that it is not fair to only play music that Edifies me but I should seek to play all genres of music especially genres that minister to the age group of your church

if your church has a lot of people over 60 you must play mahalia jackson style music at least occasionally to edify them

Clara Ward too.

if you have people 50 -60 then you need to feed them some staple singers albertina shirly ceasar dottie peoples

if you hae people 40-50 then you give them clark sisters
thomas whitfield
timothy wright

below 40 you can do what you want
fred hammond kirk israel
j moss whatever

but you should be aware that your ministry is two fold

a call to the lost (drawing those from outside inside the house of God)

and preparing the hearts of the people to recieve God's Word)

If you are not doing both of these things then you are not doing a full work,.  you are just playing, around

if you play a well rounded mix of music you will touch many people and everyone will get a chance to get a yoke broken.

I honestly feel that some of the seniors in the church will be a lot less cantankerous if they get more opportunites to get their praise on

and their praise is sometimes a lot slower then our praise.

Good Post Diverse....I know I fall short in this subject cause I am straight new school. My first lady plays as well and she plays the older songs from back in the day. I guess I should really focus on becoming all around. Thanks Doc

I like this D, good word.  I'm sort of a tweener, old & new skool.  I mostly play new skool, but I woudn't be totally lost when someone pulls up an old skool joint, although I would have to use some of my new skool chords to play it.

I have stopped telling some musicians this so much. They still dont see how it can affect the anointing in the church. Different styles of music put you in different moods. My church is made to have church so certain songs need that churchy feel.
Vision without action is just day dreaming. I miss practicing.

Absolutely true.  You have to play both I am working on both.  Plus within comtemporary there are different styles from different groups that choirs like to sing.  I am starting to notice a difference in some traditional gospel too, from the 70's and 80's and 60, and 50's and the list goes one.  Just had Harvest Home at my church they sang Hezekiah Walker, then Witness song from 10 years ago, then Clark Sisters, James Cleveland, some old gospel churchy music, and some Sam Cooke.  The night before our Mens Group went to another church and oh my it was Sam Cooke and the Soul Stirrers night.   Thank God for all I have learned this far in the Ministry for God.  I didnt know these songs but I heard them so much when I was a little boy from my Dad and Mom playing them.  Thank you Jesus.  There was one song I could not play.  I have to see that brother and find out which song that was so I can learn it.  lol  I had a great time in the Lord.

God Bless,

I heard of Beyonce but never saw her

but anyway lets stay on this thread topic
thats what PMS are for

I like responses i read

I was thinking as I was driving what if these young musicians got older and in the future everyone played electric guitars in church and the organ was a background instrument and people played banjo and electric guitars as front instrumenst and they are sitting in the congregation and somebody gets up to sing a fred hammond song or a j mosss song or new direction or even because of who you are

and the young musicians of the future start wailing on their banjos and electric guitars you would be left absolutely cold because you knew how that song sounded when it was writtten

i bet the young musicians of today when they get old would appreciate it if a musician took the time to learn how because of who you are sounded or the fred hammond songs sounded and played them close to the original

maybe that is how we need to come at these young people golden rule do unto others as you would have them do unto you
