Doc,

I've been using macs for music production/sequencing since the mid 80's.  Currently I have two PC's and a mac G3.  If your planning on using your computer for the purposes of playing and recording music, the software and digital interface you would like to use will pretty much determine whether you go mac or pc.  If your not doing audio/music, video, or desktop publishing it doesnt really matter.

Mac's are reliable, not vulnerable to viruses, and require very few tweaks.  The downside is they are waaayyyy more expensive, and many developers dont make mac versions of their software.

I do  all of my production and recording on 3.3 ghz toshiba laptop these days via 3 250gig firewire harddrives .  The Mac is only used when I need to access some of my old songs done on digital performer.

As stated macs are pretty much hassle free, but you pay for their ease of use.

My preference: Mac
I've been using Apple computers for almost 2 decades in both personal and professional use and I've no regrets.
Mac OSX is a rock-solid UNIX-based operating system and their hardware, especially the Mac Pro, is some of the most powerful you can buy.
Yes, you can probably buy/build a decent Windows-based computer for music and probably do just fine but my experience has not been that, overall. I've experienced more downtime and time spent trying to correct problems on Windows-based a/v workstations than I ever have on the Mac.
I've been through the drama of having several custom Windows machines built to do nothing but a/v work and wasted more time than I spent working.
Bottom line: the Windows operating system is full of flaws and security issues and the associated potential hardware inconsistencies sure doesn't help the matter at all.
If you stick to excellent-quality hardware and keep your Windows install clean and stripped-down then maybe you'll have something to work with...or just buy a Mac and get to work.  ;D
Music theory is not always music reality.

Try MAC.....The Mac-Mini is a great investment, and it doesn't cost much at all.
