Get new cables.
« on: November 30, 2006, 04:43:56 PM »
I was playing keyboard last night at church and the cable I usually use is old and has a short in it. I recently have been setting the amp EQ to 0. Im thinking this would be a truer sound to what the keyboard sounds like with headphones on. Someone changed the cable and put a speaker cable that looked like a guitar cable in there. The keyboard actually sounded pretty good aside from the noise. I tried plugging the guitar cable back in and it did not sound the same. Im going to go out an get some new cables.

I recommend the Monster Cable.  It's built to last.  A kittle high, but well worth it.

I like C.B.I cables they are ampong the cheapest but I have never had them fail or heard of them failing. Live wire is also a cheap but good cable.

Ditto... These are the only cables I've used. C.B.I., I'll keep these in mind the next time.

I was thinking more of the sound quality. The cable I had was a guitar cable but it was old. The speaker cable was new and it sounded truer to the keyboard headphone sound with the EQ set to flat. So Im thinking its a good idea to try different instrument cables on a flat EQ. Which ever sounds better will be the best cable to use. There was a distinct difference in sound. One sounded hollow and the other had some meat to it.

I forgot to add so Im thinking this may be a major difference in the sound of your bass through your amp.

hey whats up man. just a word of advice and not many people know this.............cables just like your EQ settings effects your overall sound. so when chosing your cable, get the one with best quality cables for your money. dont keep get the cheapest cable because youll find that youll spend more money replacing those cheap cables then you would just getting something that will last.

And that's why I once again recommend Monster Cables.  They're built with application-specific shielding to avoid interference, shorts, etc.  Plus, they are seriously heavy duty, and made to give you optimum sound.  These are my words, not their's.  They will probably out live you.

Monster cables are garbage and constantly break if your actually using them. I didn't care to much for the warranty because I got tired of wasting time going to the store to get replacments. The quality of the parts arent all that great either. I got tired of monster and starting building my own out of higher quality components. They don't while tunning your axe and sound better and cost about half  the price of monster. If you want a good cable build your own.

I'm with basedsicrace... buy a good soldering iron and make your own cables.  If you think about it ( I know I did...) these people that claim they're creating top-qualitiy cables aren't doing anything but using low-guage wire, soldering iron, and plugs.  Oh yeah, invest in some high temperature heat shrink, and a heat gun and just repair any shorts you develop.  Most develop right on the plug anyways which are easily fixed with some soldering.

When you all make your own cables where do you get your material from. And do you make shielded cables?

If I order the parts online I get the cable from here http://www.markertek.com/ I use canare GS6 instrument cable and i'll use G&H or Nuetrik connectors and I put it all together with some silver solder. And like browntree stated a good iron is a must and some heatshrink. For the price of 1 crappy monster cable you can make about 3-4 cables with these parts which are a little more superior than monster.
