Wedding Music
« on: December 04, 2006, 03:54:41 PM »
Fellow Sax Players

I've been asked to play at an upcoming wedding.  I'm interested, but haven't accepted yet, because I've never played at weddings before, just with jazz bands and church bands.  What songs do you recommend?  How much do you charge?

How much do you charge? - gibbsallen

That depends on your skill level, how well you know the bride and groom, what you think you are worth...

I would recommend going to your local music store. If you do not have a good one in your area go to a website that carrries music like amazon, ebay, or just do a search on google. There are a lot of great books that come with background tracks that are VERY professional. You can get recordings by Stevie wonder (Hal Leonard Jazz Collection), Brickhouse I wish September (70's, 80's 90 's hits - Hal leonard) and then there are books that have poplular hits in them like A house is not a Home ( Most Popular Ballads). THere are tons of them out there and they are very good. Usually come with 8 -12 songs and only cost around $10. They are a great way to play a gig. As far as how much to charge, I charge $150 for the 1st hour and then $50 per hour thereafter. But if you are not a professional, you may want to charge less.

Thanks all.  I really appreciate the feedback.  My background is mostly playing in community concert band and jazz ensembles.  Last year I starting playing in the church band and I thoroughly enjoy it. Our band has a bass, lead guitar, and of course drums and keys and myself playing sax. I don't know much about playing at weddings and doing solo stuff.  The sax stands out, so that's why I'm getting inquiries about weddings. etc.

Weddings are a tough call!  Hey, if folks know you, most expect you to do it for free.  They don't ask how much do you charge, just "Can you be here on such-and-such day?" And when you show up, they assume that your being there is a gift to the bride and groom!   :-\ You know what I'm saying!  And, whatever you would want to charge, it's probably best to negotiate that up front because once you get to the wedding, you can actually find yourself forgotten when they go passing out the checks to the cake baker, the decorator, the hairdresser.  I once drove over an hour to do a wedding and got nothing more than a pat on the back and a "gee, thanks!"  So, unless you ask up front, you may find yourself doing it "pro bono!" ;)

I try to avoid getting sucked into the wedding vortex!  LOL  Maybe I'm bad for feeling that way, but I hate doing weddings.   ;D  It costs you two evenings away from your family, the worst of the two being the wedding rehearsal.  You're sitting there yawning and rolling your eyes while the two mother-in-laws argue over where the flower girl's going to stand.

Hey guys, I'm not usually this "Bah Humbug!"  Honestly!  I love being a musician, just not at a wedding, that's all!  hahaha ;D

Wedding song suggestions...Here and Now (L. Vandross), Unforgettable (N. Cole), Because You Loved Me (C. Dion), At Last (E. James), I Believe in You and Me (W. Houston).   Most all of these you can download the soundtracks online.

The worst choice for a song I was ever asked to do at a wedding was the Theme from the Titanic.  The marriage lasted less than six month...call me superstitious, but I wouldn't recommend putting a song about a sinking ship in the ceremony just before the exchanging of the vows!  ;D
