I bought a scrunchie!
« on: January 05, 2007, 01:12:34 PM »
I went to the store and bought a scrunchie for my bass. Yes, I made sure it was black.

Anyway, immediately my tapping lines got better. I can run through some arpeggios and not get a weird secondary noise. I still feel like I cheating, but like someone else said, if Victor Wooten is doing it, why can I? I haven't posted an clips in a while, but I expect to get some up pretty soon.

Also, I found a neato program TablEdit. It's demoware, but you can use all the features up to 16 bars. I just gives you an annoying prompt when you do some things, but other than that, it works fine. You can export tabs to text (like we use here), midi, html, and some other formats. It allow you to do tabs for as many strings as you like. I configured mine for my 8 string. Now, when I learn something, I can tab it out. Get it! I'm testing it out some more, but I may just buy the full version. There is another program called "TabIt". Tabit doesn't allow you to do custom string configurations. It only supports 4 and 5 strings. It also doesn't allow you to export to MIDI, unless you buy the full version.

If anyone wants these programs let me know. I can put them on my site for a while. Again, these are demo programs, but they allow you to use full features, albeit restricted.

does the scrunchie affect your sustain at all?  Also do you have it above the nut or right after it?

I use the kind that looks like rubber bands, I don't know what they are called..  Robbed my daughter's hair box, and found one that fits just right.

in my experience (which is limited) jeremyr... it does affect the substain, but only when playing open strings.  To be honest I don't use mines much, because I am not much of
a slapper or tapper, so its stays above the nut, unless I am goofing around or practicing slap.

I forgot where I seen the picture at but a female bassist( I think) uses a headband as her scrunchie.

After, but since I have so many strings, I have to pull it down to the 2nd fret sometimes.

If I keep it at the 1st fret, it mutes the strings just enough, so I don't have to mute as much with my hands. The scrunchie barely affects my F# and B strings, since they're so big. The E strings gets affected a little. It mutes the high F the most, but like I said, if the scrunchie is at the 1st fret, it doesn't do that much. I play closed-position most of the time, not many open strings.

I have the one, like Torch described, that looks like a rubber band.

I think I have seen that same picture... just can't remember who or where.

you tried using the floating thumb technique?  I'm positive it would definately help you with muting and it feels natural.

I use floating thumb, but I don't do it with my elbow cocked in the air, like in that dude's video. The scrunchie mutes it just enough, where I don't have to worry as much. I don't plan to get used to it though.

he really is over emphasizing in that video.  I've talked to him on several occasions (Tod Johnson) and if you look at his other vidoes you'll see that his elbow isn't as cocked up either.  As a matter of fact what I do is I let my elbow slouch as much as possible untile it raises my thumb off the strings.  That's my sign that my wrist isnt' straight enough.

I grabbed some of the rubber band like ones a while back ago. They work really well but if you bring it too low on the neck the muting sounds like it ends too abrubtly (kinda like stopping someone in the middle of there sentence) but it works for me. To me it also seems like the more strings you have the more muting is important mainly bc he have more strings to brush up against. I have a 6-string btw.
